A NEWLY-TRIMMED-down Mark Philippoussis was in top shape for the Hopman Cup and should produce "big things" at the 13th annual tournament in Perth, his coach Peter McNamara said today.

Philippoussis will team with Nicole Pratt to represent Australia in the international teams event, which has a star-studded field including world No.2 and reigning US Open champ Russian Marat Safin and South African stalwart Wayne Ferreira.

The women's drawcards are Monica Seles, representing the US, and Switzerland's world No.1 Martina Hingis.

"He's pretty fit," McNamara said.

"He's lost a few pounds. He's down to about 92 kilos, which is a lot from where he was at the US Open where he was 100 kilos and the reason why he wasn't playing so well.

"I expect big things of Mark at the Hopman Cup. I think he's in the best shape he's been in for a while – touch wood, there's no injuries.

"He's hitting the ball as well as I've ever seen him hit the ball.

"I think he's got to be pretty confident with the way he's going to go into the Hopman Cup."

McNamara said the tournament would allow him to gauge Philippoussis' form and physical condition in the lead-up to the Australian Open in Melbourne from January 15.

"I'm very pleased with the way he is. He's got his own motivation back, he's running every morning, he's working out, he's practising," McNamara said.

Philippoussis is aiming to rank within the top five men's players in the world next year and McNamara believes the goal is achievable on current form.

"There's no question he can be top five - it's just whether he wants to. It's up to him," McNamara said.

"If he puts his head down and he plays well ... there's no reason why he can't be."

The Hopman Cup starts at the Burswood Dome on December 30 with a qualifying match between Belgium and Japan.
