STUTTGART, Germany: Mark Philippoussis fell victim to a freak injury overnight, quitting the Stuttgart Masters Series after the first game of his third-round match against Wayne Ferreira with a neck problem.

The victory was the second upset in as many days for the veteran South African Ferreira, who knocked out holder Thomas Enqvist of Sweden on Wednesday in straight sets.

Philippoussis, the 12th seed, said he brought the stiff neck trouble on himself.

"I sleep on my stomach and the hotel pillow is really soft," said the Aussie.

"I just woke up with a stiff neck, it happens.

"I came here in the morning and saw the doctor, took two anesthetics in my backside and three in my neck.

"My groundstrokes weren't too bad, but I couldn't lift my head to serve - no chance."
