Australians Mark Philippoussis and Lleyton Hewitt are through to the third round of the Stuttgart Masters Series tennis tournament.

Philippoussis, seeded 12th, defeated Frenchman Arnaud Clement in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Philippoussis says while he has not discounted making the final of the Masters series, it is not something he is worried about

"I'm just looking at playing some good tennis, obviously this is a chance, there's two masters series to go and that's where the big points are," he said.

"But for me, to be quite honest, my goal is to just keep playing some good tennis, to play the way I should be playing, and let's just see what happens."

The 8th-seeded Hewitt downed two-time winner, Dutchman Richard Krajicek, also in straight sets, 6-4,7-5.

"You look at the draw and see Richard Krajicek first up, I was worried," Hewitt said.

"He can serve you out of the match, but he didn't serve great out there and I took advantage of those times and got the breaks when it counted."

Jelena Dokic had a straight sets first round win over Germany's Andrea Glass at the WTA tournament in Leipzig.

Dokic, often accused of inconsistency, impressed against the combative German, winning 6-2, 6-2 and is now emerging as one of the possible outsiders to win the tournament.


Hewitt warned

Incoming Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald has advised Lleyton Hewitt to reduce his playing schedule next year to avoid tennis burn-out.

Fitzgerald, who will succeed John Newcombe as captain after Australia plays Spain in December's final, fears Hewitt may risk overdoing it.


Rusedski chases Cash


English tennis player Greg Rusedski is considering appointing Australia's former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash as his coach.

Cash, who is based in London, offered his services to Rusedski at the US Open seven weeks ago.

Rusedski says he is mentally and physically ready to force his way back up the rankings after an injury-plagued year.
