Very little news on the kicking competition from the exhibition versus
the Saints on August 8. With the Packer offense grinding away, the game
wasn't riding on the kicking. Brett Conway did erase any thoughts about
a real or perceived Lambeau jinx with a solid 32-yarder. Brett did continue
to out-distance Longwell on kickoffs by about 8 yards.

Do Well, Resolve Little From Green Bay Press-Gazette
Brett Conway made 2 for 3 (38 and 27) on field goals and his kickoffs
consistently went into the endzone (70.5 avg), while Ryan Longwell was
2 for 3 (51 and 27) on field goals and his kicks landed between the goal
line and 10 yard line. However each kicker missed a game-winning field
goal opportunity, Conway from 27 and Longwell from 42.

Here are some recent articles describing Brett Conway and Ryan Longwell's
kicking
efforts in the Packers' 1998 training camp:

Spotlight
on Conway is even brighter from Green Bay Press-Gazette Online.
Due to the slow recovery of Conway's thigh muscle pull and the need
to open additional space on the roster due to injuries in the opening game
to Craig Newsome and Mark Chmura, Brett Conway has been placed on injured
reserve. He cannot be activated for the 1997-98 season. The Packer coaches
and management have expressed confidence that Conway will be kicking for
the Packers in years to come, but obviously there will be a kicking competition
in camp next summer as Longwell will have a year's NFL experience behind
him by then.

Brett Conway suffered a quadriceps pull during warm-ups at Oakland.
He did not kick at all. All the extra practice kicking to correct problems
from the New England game may have been a factor. In his place Ryan Longwell
was 3 for 4 in field goals, counting the one he was allowed to kick-over
due to a penalty, but his kickoffs tended to be short.
Conway missed 3 field goals in the preseason tilt against the Patriots. The errant tries were from 32, 44 and 40 yards, and all went wide right. The plus side of making two booming kickoffs and making an extra-point try were very small consolation. Nevertheless, the Packer coaches and management expressed confidence in Brett. For the most part, fans seem to be supportive as well, as he got a good reception in his second half (post miscue) appearances from the Lambeau crowd.

Terms were not disclosed, but Jacke will be replacing Norm Johnson who refused to take a pay cut from $650,000. In 1996 Jacke's base salary was $625,000 with the Packers, and he was an unrestricted free agent for 1997.
At the time of Jacke's signing Brett Conway had not signed with the Packers, but hours later Conway inked a deal with Reinfeldt. Welcome aboard, Brett!!
