On the Road
Good friends Dawn Staley and Lisa Leslie have learned a lot about each other after years of being friends and of being roommates while on the road with USA Basketball.
"There are so many rules to our friendship," Leslie said. "Like, she has to shower first."
And apparently, Staley has to beat Leslie to the shower in the morning -- no matter what.
What if Lisa gets up before Dawn?
"It doesn't matter," Staley said. "I'll get up before her. I'm very anal."
"She's very picky," Leslie added.
"I leave the bathroom exactly how the maid left it when she cleaned," Staley said. "I can't stand water around the sink or around the rug; it's got to be like -- clean."
The two have even perfected a formula for making sure the bathroom is up to Staley's specifications each morning while they're on the road.
"Usually, when we're staying in a hotel we'll take a shower in the morning, and then we'll take a shower at the gym," Staley said. "While we're gone, the housekeepers clean the bathroom, and because we showered at the gym, we don't have to take a shower when we get back to the room. The next morning, it's still clean."

Dawn Talks about their Friendship
Actually, at first, Lisa and I had a rivalry because she's from the West coast and I'm from the East coast. I wanted to prove that the East coast had better basektball than the West coast, and it does by the way. But as we got older we became better and better friends and now we keep in touch outside of USA Basketball when anything important is going on with either one of us.
Lisa's Turn to Talk
The first time I came here, ten years ago in 1989 for the Junior World Championships, she and I roomed together. We've roomed together every year since. Our personalities are different but we really compliment each other. She brings a lot of intensity to the court and being on her team makes you want to play that way too. We always tried to get on each other's team when we were out here. For about the first six years that we knew each other we never talked unless we were here. But now we talk on the phone a couple times a month.

"Dawn, I think, couldn't imagine a life without basketball. She is pure Philly, tough, smart, and quick. Shw wears a rubber band around her wrist when she plays and snaps it as punishment when she makes a mistake. She and Lisa have played on so many national teams together. Dawn dishing the ball to Lisa, that they had developed a sixth sense about each other on the court. They played as if wired to the same circuit panel."
