Randolph GLOBE Soil Studies
Randolph students took the first step toward soil investigation in the community. Students all
over the world have been gathering data about the air and water since the GLOBE program
started in the spring of 1995. Mr.Lopatka was trained at the University of Illinois in March
of that year. We were one of the first schools in Illinois to start gathering scientific data.
Temperature and precipitation data at Randolph are sent to the GLOBE data base daily
over the Internet. NASA computers generate beautiful visualizations that you can see at:
http://www.globe.gov
Pictures of Randolph students involved in GLOBE activities can be seen at Mr. Lopatkas
Web site.

NASA scientist Dr. Elissa Levine in Greenbelt, Maryland and Dr.Jim Washburn at the
University of Arizona will be using the information that Randolph students send in on the Internet.
Soil samples will be analyzed and characterized in the Science lab. PH of the soil will be
determined. Samples will be dried in drying ovens at the University of Chicago.
Room 210 was the first class to try to auger into the soil. They ran into rocks and bricks once
they were 30 centimeters down. The students of room 219 had the same experience at another site
nearby.
Finally room 218 had better luck, as they were able to get a soil sample 50 centimeters down.
It appears that the athletic field behind Randolph is made up of a land fill of bricks and rocks
covered with several inches of topsoil with grass.
Global Positioning Satellites are used to send the latitude, longitude and elevation data to
GLOBE scientist.
Special thanks to the Gifted and Talented department of the Chicago Public Schools for
helping purchase supplies and materials for these innovative activities.
