Randolph's New Explorers
Randolph sixth graders toured the University of Chicago campus on Monday April 28, 1997.
The trip was sponsored by the New Explorers Program, On The Trail. Mr. Lopatka was trained at the Museum of Surgical Science for this activity. Earlier in the year, Mrs. Thompson and Mr. Lopatka lead their students through an educational unit of activities that included a Bill Kurtis video tape on the mysterious illness that was killing people in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.
The students of 202 got into scientific groups and examined clues to try and solve the mystery.
The culminating activity was the trip to the University and lunch with University scientists. They had the pleasure of meeting world famous paleontologist Paul Sereno. Mr. Sereno has been featured in Time and National Geographic for his discovery of the Deltadromeus in the Sahara Desert last year, and his discovery in 1988 of the oldest
Dinosaur. Students had a chance to examine the newly discovered fossils after they had lunch with 6 other scientist. The trip was arranged by Dr. Ron Dubreuil of the University of Chicago.
Dr. Dubreuil has been a science fair judge at Randolph for the last three years.
Room 202 students viewed a LANSAT satellite image of their path from Randolph to the University. They took GPS (Global Positioning System) reading of their position on the globe as they toured the campus.
Latitude and Longitude readings of Rockefeller Chapel, the memorial to the first nuclear chain reaction and the Frank Lloyd Wright home will be sent to GLOBE scientists over the Internet.
