| Playing Hockey & Teaching Astronomy Every Friday night, I get together with my friends for a friendly game of hockey. Some of us have been playing together for 25 years. We call ourselves the Duffers. Guys like Muzzy, The King, Wheezer, Magoo, Alien, Papa Joe, Klinger, Thor, Hacksaw, Stump, Brinks, Ghost, Thor, Anvil, Captain Hook, Tweedy (my 27 year old son), Beak Jr. (my 34 year old son) and some of their friends take the Ice every Friday at 8:30 at the Bridgeview Park District Ice Rink. We skate up a giant thurst, then quench it with a couple of Strohs, compliments of Brinks Granato. Brinks is the father of Cammi Granato (USA female Olympic hockey team) and Tony Granato of the San Jose Sharks. We take a few road trips each year. We have been to Lake Placid, Reno, Nevada, Hayward, Wisconsin, Dubuque, Iowa, Tampa Bay, Florida, Jan Jose, California, Columbus, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan. I love teaching people about the wonders of astronomy. I teach science at Randolph School in Chicago. I make presentations at libraries and schools. I served as an instructor at the Adler Planetarium for 13 years. My students and I are shown in the picture below filming the solar eclipse on May 10,1995. We sent a live video feed into the school while some students were able to view a projected telescopic image outside. |
