APRIL 5th MEETING A WASHOUT

The first PCC meeting of 1997 was a wash-out. It's hard to believe that since we are always on the Lake or in the water that could happen, but the storm that blew through Pickwick, which by the way had a tornado tagging along with it, managed to keep everyone at home for the weekend. So, we will have another meeting on May 10th at Auqa Yacht Harbor "B" Dock at 9:00 am to discuss the Fun-Race, the InterNet and Web Site, a flag design for our club, club dues, and anything else that might come up. I understand that this date is kind of far off, but we do not want to conflict with the Governor's Cup Regatta which is scheduled for the weekend of May 3rd. The 1997 Raft-up Schedule has been completed and will be posted at as many sites as possible. MembershipCards will be mailed out shortly and the Schedule is also posted on the back of your Membership Card.

THE SUDDEN MASS EXIT

As many of you know by now several boats have now left the old Pickwick Cove Marina, now known as the Tenn-Tom Marina, because of the sudden increase in slip fees. We all expected the fees to go up, but no one expected the fees to almost double. That wouldn't have been so bad if the new ownership would have at least given the slip renters a chance to voice their concerns over the current problems at the Marina and what they felt should be the first and foremost action taken to improve the Marina and protect the boats.

Several boats that needed covered slips went to the Pickwick State Park where the slip fees were more reasonable and lower than Aqua Yacht Harbor. On the other hand the sailboaters couldn't go to the State Park because of the long waiting list.

Well, the sailboaters' prayers were answered by one man who was listening and wanted to help, Mickey Miller. Mickey is the Dockmaster at Aqua Yacht Harbor. When we first approached Mickey about any possible open slips he might have, he quietly said he didn't have anything available. But when he heard that several sailboaters were fed up and needed a place to put their boats, he went to work. Mickey didn't make any promises to the sail- boaters. He just said "let me see what I could do". In two days he had come up with a plan that would allow 11 boats to move to Aqua and have a nice safe place to moor their boats. Mickey gave everyone a choice. That was the key to everything. Mickey gave the people a choice. That is all the boaters wanted was a choice and someone who would listen to their problems seriously. Well needless to say, when given a choice people are going to go where someone wants their company and respects their business. As of Saturday, March 29, 1997 eight (8) sailboats had moved to Aqua, leaving only 3 slips empty that Mickey was able to aquire for the boat owners. From the boat owners that Mickey gave a choice too, we appreciate what you did for us and we will try hard to blend in at Aqua and be good considerate neighbors and residents. Thanks again Mickey from all of us you helped.

Be Safe........... and well see you on the Lake.
