2006 Titans
5/20/06 Districts - Abraham
LincolnDistrict play, it is time to step up. It was a perfect day today, even a little liquid sunshine in the second half. We play AL again for the second time in less then two weeks. We beat them the last time with the only goal in the game being scored in the last second of the game at their house. This time they come to our house. We talk to the team and tell them the key today will be to attack, score early, score often, and don't let down. We come out with total control to start the game and 2 minutes 30 seconds into the game Cory Jasek saves the ball from going out beside the goal, plays it back and Adam Larkin places the ball into the net. We go up 1-0 and now all we need to do is keep it up. Play goes back and forth now as both teams seem to step up at different times. With 12 minutes left in the half we are called for a foul and AL is awarded a free kick. It is a perfectly placed ball into the right upper corner and hit hard. We are tied at 1. We go back on the attack and 3 minutes later with 9 minutes left in the half Pablo Navarrete takes a shot on goal that is saved by the keeper but he is unable to handle it. The ball plays back out to the front and Tommy VonMende is there for the follow up and puts us back up 2-1 where it stays to the half. The second half is solid play back and forth and we appear to be dominating. When AL does come on the attack our defense is able to play the ball back to the other end to shut them down every time. Then with 2:30 left in the game AL sets up for a corner kick and finds some one on the back post and rolls the ball in to tie up the game at 2. Oh no here we go again. We make several attempts on goal and come up empty handed. We out shot them 22 to 4 and certainly had our chances but didn't take advantage of them. The game ends and we go into our 5 overtime game of the year. In fact in case you haven't noticed, 10 of our 15 games this year have been 1 point games. Shortly into the first OT Pablo finds himself on a break away and one on one with the keeper. Pablo has Dan Fisher right beside him for the drop but Pablo doesn't know that Dan is there and he takes on the keeper. The keeper wins and the OT goes on. It was two on one and could have been over right and there. The first 10 minute OT comes to an end we switch sides and go again for the second 10 OT. It has been a light rain now since late in the second half. Finally with 6:30 left in the game we had the strangest end to a game that you may have ever seen. Christopher Navarrete hits the ball hard, it is off the side of his foot, it hits the center ref in the legs. It hits him so hard his legs, are knocked out from under him and the ref lands on his back. The ball rebounds to the center of the field and lands at the feet of Logan Stichler. Logan takes a gentle swing and places the ball in the left side of the net. Everyone is looking to see what the call is. The ref still on his back, looks and blows the whistle, GOAL, game over, WE WIN. It was just a weird play and a funny ending. The win advances us to round one of Sub State and the opportunity to play Thomas Jefferson again for the second time in a week. We lost to TJ on Tuesday 1-0. We will look to erase that lose and advance on to the Sub State Finals. We will play TJ at TJ on Tuesday 5/23/06 at 5pm. CONGRATULATIONS on the WIN, one down, and on to the next one, one game at a time. Thank you all for your support today, even in the rain. |
