  5/12/07 - Norwalk Tournament
From 8 place last year to 4 place this year.  What a difference one win can make.  We travel to Norwalk for the annual Norwalk Tourney.  The weather is perfect and you can't ask for a better day.  Our first game is against Nevada.  We are coming in off a 3 game winning streak and are feeling good about where we are.  We tell them to continue to play the way we are and feel good about who you are.  Communicate, make the easy pass, and have fun.  We come out flat again but we manage to hang on the first half and go into the half 0-0.  The second half they certainly came out a lot hungrier then we were and they are on a steady attack for about the first 10 solid minutes.  Then at the 14 minute mark Kyle Larkin takes on and beats the last defender and then is on his way to the keeper.  The keeper comes out and Kyle puts away an easy one to put us up 1-0.  We manage to hold them off as they continue to come at us and log the win to move into the winners bracket.  Riley Landolt logs his 4th shut out of the season.  We tell them at the end they just beat a 9-1 team, feel good boys and keep it going.  I asked Kyle what he was thinking before he took the shot, he said I better not miss this one.  I then asked what were you thinking after you made it, he said, that one's for you mom.  Good job.

Winning and going into the winners bracket earns us a 2 hour rest before our next game.  Good, bad, who knows but we sure didn't came back to play.  The next game is against Waukee for a chance to play in the Championship game.  It is my fault on this one, we let them sit in the shade just a little to long, as we just couldn't get our engine running.  We are down 2-0 at the half and still in the game.  We lost all communication skills in this one and couldn't seem to pick it up in the second half either.  We find our self down 5-0 and have everyone in the game now to get some playing time in the tournament.  Finally at the 24 minute mark Brett Epperson, who gave his all today, plays a great through ball to Scott Nelson who makes a diagonal run on goal.  The keeper comes out and Scotty puts it away for the goal and now 1-5.  They score another to finish it out 1-6.  The loss puts in the in bracket to play for 3rd/4th.

Next game, the host, Norwalk.  Three games in one day will take it's toll on anyone, it is showing that we maybe are not as conditioned as we think we are.  We have some pretty tired athletes at this point. Before we know it we are down 3-0 in this one by the half and like the last game we still are not talking.  The problem in both was our inability to mark up or drop back.  That all comes with communication, if no one is talking, no one is helping.  If no one if helping, people tend to get open.  The two games we won this week were due to communication.  When we talk, look out, we can be dangerous.  Communication makes the game so much easier.  Second half they score another quick goal, go up 4-0, and finish the game 5-0.  Everyone got into this game as well including our back up keeper Hunter Brugenhemke.  Hunter made the trip to cover for his brother Zane, who was not able to travel this weekend.  Welcome Hunter.

We now turn our focus forward as we prepare for our final home game of the season as cross town Thomas Jefferson comes to our house.  Thomas Jefferson beat St Alberts the other night in city competition so with a win we have our shot at a share of the city Championship.  This is a big game as the plan is to get the win and send us into the playoffs feeling good.  Join us Tuesday night for our last home game of the season.  We will say Good Bye to our Seniors as they will play their last game on the home field.
