2006 Titans
5/09/06 Abraham LincolnWhat a game and what a finish. Back to back games are hard on everybody, the players, the coaches, and the fans. Tonight we traveled to cross town rival AL to take them on in what always proves to be an interesting game. It was Senior parent night for them and that was just enough to pump them and got them coming out firing on all cylinders. We are still looking for that game where we play an 80 minute game, when we do, look out. We came out flat in the first half and AL was handing it to us. They won the possession battle, the 50/50 ball, and flat out wanted the game more then we did. We managed to survive the first half and we slide into half tied at 0. We had a little heart to heart talk at the half and I challenged them to look around, dig deep, go out win the 50/50, slow it down, talk and posses and we will walk away with a W. We came out the second half and never looked back. It was two different teams tonight in each half. We started taking control of the game and putting the attack together. We just couldn't finish again as we managed to put together several runs on the on goal and some nice corner plays. All that means nothing though if you don't put it away. Soccer is a very unforgiving game. You can dominate all you want and one little breakdown and it is all over. Finally with 15 seconds left in the game Tommy Vonmende starts it off with a good pass up to Dan Fisher who makes the quick one touch through ball to Pablo Navarrete. It is now Pablo in the open one on one with the keeper and with :07 on the clock puts it away and the celebration begins. All most another OT for us tonight but hats off to the team tonight as again they found the way to win and put us to 8-1. Riley Landolt never touched the ball the second half as he logs his 6th shut out for the season. Defensively we truly can say that we played a super game in the back as only 6 shots for the night got to the goal area. Chris Navarrete ran a tight ship tonight with the help of Alex O'Neill, who probably had his best game all year. Brandon Duffy was again the silent hero in the back on defense with Alex Seliak, and Evan Summy. What can you say about Evan, he plays his heart out last night, gets the winning goal to end the game and comes right back tonight and plays even harder. Evan has stepped into the Stopper spot against Sioux City North and has not looked back. Tommy VonMende turned it up a notch or two in the second half as well, he started winning the 50/50, totally dominated his side of the field, and had two completely different halves. Way to step it up Tommy. Others that came in off the bench tonight and played very well were Kyle Herren, Brett Epperson, and Zach Duyson. Good game, great finish, way to find the way to win and staying with it to the end. Three days of practice now to work out any stiffness and then on to the Norwalk Tourney on Saturday. Our first game Saturday will be against Nevada at 11:30. Join us Saturday as we go back on the road. JV got the train back on the track tonight. We logged our first JV win tonight since the season opener against Atlantic. It felt great to see them play like they did again. The first goal was by Ryan Cook unassisted from a broken play and found himself about 25 yards out with the ball and going to goal. Ryan puts it away and logs his first goal of the season. Then just a few minutes later Kyle Larkin takes it in unassisted and we go up 2-0 at the half. Now of course I have stories to share with them at the half. We give them examples and explain how a 2-0 lead is the worst one you can have. They get 1 before you get number 3 and they are back in the game. We need to go out, score quick, go up 3-0 and watch them hang their heads. Well we don't get number 3 but we do manage to hang on and log out 2 win of the season. Zane Brugenhemke logged his 3rd shut out of the season. Some JV that played very well and deserve their chance to see their names in print are Chris Wenck, Ryan Cook, Nate Dreager, Scott Nelson, Jacob Durand, Darian Scott, and Alex Mares. Great game guys, it was nice to get back into the W column. We were once again able to get everybody into the game and that is always a good feeling. JV is off until Tuesday when they will finish their season on the road again cross town rival Thomas Jefferson. |
