Report from Tournament Director Doug Korns:
In 2007 the Flying Deuces agreed to combine the final week of play for the traditional Winner of the Year honor with the right to claim the club trophy and engrave an entry for 2007.
The course was the local basket course, Coyote Creek at Hellyer Park. The format was to be 27 holes, one round of nine from the short tees and two rounds played from the long tees. This tournament was played with no player handicaps. Attendees were Chris Illes, Eric Mickelson, Ted Dorff and Doug Korns, with Jim Hauer being a last minute no-show.
Playing the short nine first, Chris took the first lead at hole 2, claiming the only 3 in the group. Ted pulled even with him on the next hole with the first deuce of the day. On hole four Eric and Doug had 2's, making it a four-way tie again. Eric slipped backwards on hole five with a 4, then joined with Doug and Ted getting deuces on hole 6, but slid further backwards on hole 7 with a 5! Both Doug and Chris had deuces on holes eight. After nine holes the scores were, Doug - 25, Ted - 26, Chris -27 and Eric 29.
Playing the back tees for the second nine, Doug started off with the only deuces on the middle nine. Scores were more balanced on the second nine with fours being more abundant on the scorecard. Ted had the only 5 on the middle nine to slide backwards a little. Scores on the middle nine, 30 for Doug, Eric and Chris, 32 for Ted.
The final nine was similar to the seond nine, balanced scores, no deuces, and one 5 for Eric on the last hole. Scores on the final nine, 30 for Doug, Ted and Chris, 32 for Eric. Doug was able to maintain the lead he acquired on the short nine for the win. Chris played very consistent, with one deuce and no fives to claim second place.
Final scores were: Doug - 85, Chris - 87, Ted - 88, and Eric - 91.
