Report from Tournament Director Doug Korns:
At the last moment, last year's trophy winner, Doug Korns, decided to again combine the final week of play for the traditional Winner of the Year honor with the right to claim the club trophy and insure an entry for 2008 was engraved.
The course was Classic Central I course, one of the oldest Deuces courses. The format was a simple 18 holes. This tournament was played with no player handicaps. Attendees were Eric Mickelson, Jim Hauer and Doug Korns.
As current Winner of the Week, Eric tee'd off first at hole one. He managed an amazing skip out of the O.B. parking lot, crashed aginst the curb and somehow rolled up safely onto the good curb! Jim managed a safe shot to the green, but not too close to the target. Doug was throwing for the first time in over a month, since a bicycle crash resulted in a major right wrist-jamming. He safely landed on the green with a tenuous, first-test drive. Everybody "holed-out" with a deuce for a good start. Eric managed the only deuce on the second hole, after a playground object stopped him from ending up in the O.B. sand. But then on the third hole, a curving roller left him O.B. inside the main pavilion and he struggled to a five. Jim managed the only par on hole three. At the tough, water hole four, Jim's disc landed on a rock, and skipped out into the lake, not to be found. Doug, not trusting his wrist yet, played cautious and went for a very safe concrete landing with a wall protecting the shot from water. Eric tried to go big by going over and around the trees, above the water, but got stuck at the very top of a tree. The tree was so thick that the disc was untouchable with a baseball throw and so close to the water, the the ball was lost too after a couple of throws. Doug played safely around the water and claimed the only par. Everyone bogeyed hole five as Jim's good approach shot was followed by a short putt into the concrete base of the lamp pole. Everyone claimed a par on hole 6, but only Jim could manage a par on the long hole to the the utility pole in the meadow. After more pars for everyone at hole eight, Eric produced another amazing skip shot at hole nine. Throwing across the pond/lake, his disc barely cleared the water and skipped off the rounded rock shoreline. The disc curved along the shoreline, but somehow ended up on the safe shoreline again. Doug drove far enough to clear the water and straight enough, that he was able to get the only deuce on hole nine. After nine holes the scores were, Doug - 28, Jim - 28 and Eric 30.
Doug bogeyed an otherwise uneventful long hole ten. Hole eleven was a challenge for everyone. Jim went to the right of the slide across the bridge entry, Eric went to the left and Doug almost made it across the bridge, but was swatted down by trees on the far side, leaving him down at creek level. Eric got across the bridge, but Jim was stopped on the far side by trees, ala Doug, leaving him on the creek hillside. It took Doug two throws to get back to the fairway. The skinny sign target was elusive too. Eric fared best with a five, while Jim and Doug took a six and seven, respectively. At hole twelve, with big parking lot O.B. Jim went for it, while Doug played very safe again to avoid O.B. Jim's drive was good enough for the only deuce on the hole. No one could get a par on the long hole thirteen. Eric made a long deuce on hole fourteen, but Jim's shorter attempt for a deuce was declared a no-hit. Eric had a bogey on hole fifteen and Doug had a bogey on hole sixteen, while Jim was parring. Jim "slammed the door" with a deuce on hole seventeen and everyone claimed a par at eighteen. Scores on the back nine, Jim - 29, Eric - 31 and Doug 34.
Final scores were: Jim - 57, Eric - 61 and Doug - 62.
