Six players arrived at Hellyer Park on Memorial Day Monday for the Flying Deuces annual Ed Theis Memorial Day Teams Tournament. John Kimball drove down the night before from Elk Grove to join up with Rich, Eric, Jim, John and Doug. With twenty-seven holes of best disc golf planned over the new Coyote Creek and old Hellyer courses, the Deuces started at 6:30 AM.

Pairings for teams were random draw, with Doug Korns being paired with john Kimball, Eric Mickelson matched up with Jim Hauer, leaving Rich Norris and John Davis as the three teams. Since it didn't make sense to send one team off alone, all three teams played in one group.

Everybody stayed even for the first three holes. All teams had deuces on the second hole, as well as the seventh hole. Doug-John scored a par on the fourth hole, while the other two teams bogeyed. On the sixth hole, John Kimball had a long drive that Doug finished off with a ringing deuce. The eighth hole brought a par to Doug-John as they converted on a good approach shot, while the rest bogeyed again. After nine holes Doug and John had a three stroke lead.

Transitioning to the older object course, proved fruitful as Rich and John produced four straight deuces to close in on the leaders. Then the Park Ranger admonished us for playing in the regular park and sent us back to the basket course.Birdies started to appear more frequently on the scorecard. Doug and John finished the next nine with 24 as did Rich and John. Eric and Jim let too many bogeys onto their scorecard and they pulled in with 29 for the second nine.

Everybody improved on the last nine holes, as Jim and Eric scored a 27 to finish three over par for the day. Rich and John came in under par at 26 to finish at two under par for the day. Doug and John held onto their early lead, tallying a 25 to finish at 74, or seven under par for the day.

Congratulation to John Kimball and Doug Korns, winners of the 1998 Memorial Day Teams Tournament.
