Swede Football

A Winning Tradition
![]()
Great traditions are developed over
time. The heritage of Bethany College football has been assembled, season by season,
beginning November 14, 1893!
Bethany Football has been especially competitive and exciting since the
Coach Bennie Owen years began in 1902, and the Swedes defeated nearly all challengers,
including Oklahoma University (twice) and the institution that became Kansas State
University.
In the 22 years under the leadership of Head Coach Dr. Ted Kessinger, the
Bethany College Swedes have had a strong winning tradition. But that's only part of the
story. "Coach K" has created a program that focuses on the student-athletes in
many ways: academically, athletically, socially, spiritually, and in terms of family
relationships and career preparation. Winning, although a strong goal, certainly is not
the only objective. Developing the complete person: that's the Bethany way!
International Competition:
In the summer of 1985 , Bethany competed against the Swedish
International All-Star team in two exhibition games in Stockholm. The B.C. Swedes
averaged 50 points a game while holding their opponents to less than 10.
In 1989, Bethany returned to Scandinavia and played against the Norwegian National
All-Star team in Oslo and a combination of the two best Swedish teams in Stockholm. The
Bethany Swedes were again victorious, this time by an average score of 45 to 3.
Plans are in the works to once again have Bethany College represent American
College Football abroad.
