With arctic weather sweeping across the state of Kansas, baseball games
in early March have become a rare occurrence. The Bethany College baseball team has
postponed multiple games already this season, and last Saturday they were forced to rent a
field in Wichita to squeeze in a quickly-scheduled non-conference doubleheader meeting
with Sterling College.
"I hate to play a home game away from home," said coach Mike
Waldie, "but we needed the innings. Wins are great, but right now we just
needed the games before our conference play," Waldie added.
Game one against Sterling was a tight contest, but the Swedes
prevailed, 5-3. Junior Clay Witt was the winning pitcher for Bethany.
Game two proved to be a showcase for the Swedes at the plate.
Bethany racked up thirteen runs, while allowing only five, to complete a sweep of the
doubleheader. Freshman Clint Strassburg was the winning pitcher for the Swedes.
"For practice being inside all week I thought we played quite well
last Saturday," Waldie said.
Bethany, now 5-4 on the young season, will travel to Chickasha,
Oklahoma, next Saturday to face the University of Science and Arts
"Eagles." Then the Swedes will travel into Texas for games against St.
Edward's University in Austin, and St. Mary's College in San Antonio.
