Bethany College baseball has jumped out to a 2-3 start
on the year, with all tough non-conference games so far.
The B.C. Swedes opened with a single game at Fort
Hays State University, as the host Tigers were ranked #9 in NCAA Division
II. Bethany fell to FHSU, 7-1, behind pitcher of record transfer-student
Chris Bernal (0-1) of Redlands, California. "It was very exciting
to play at Fort Hays and we enjoyed that competitive level," said head
coach Mike Waldie.
"We threw six pitchers in nine innings, and basically
treated that first game as a scrimmage. We wanted to find out how
some of our young players would handle game situations, and I think we
came away with a pretty good handle on that," Waldie said.
The Swedes had little time to regroup as they then
hosted a doubleheader against Peru State University- Nebraska. In
game one, Bethany trailed 7-5 heading into the bottom half of the seventh
inning. With two men on, senior Jason Schmeiser of Vista, California,
belted a three-run homer to lift the Swedes to an 8-7 victory. Freshman
Daniel Regan (1-1) of Holcomb was the pitcher of record.
Game two against Peru proved to be a reversal of
scenarios. Bethany led Peru 6-2 after the sixth inning, only to give
up five runs in the top of the seventh, and to eventually fall 7-6.
Once again Regan was the pitcher of record for Bethany.
Bethany defeated Hillsdale Baptist University on
February 24, and then on the road February 27 fell to Phillips University
in Oklahoma. Last Sunday the Swede baseball varsity were to host
Benedictine College, but the game was snowed out. Since then the
coaches and volunteers have been in the snow working on the field, trying
to get ready for Dana College coming to Lindsborg on Saturday.
