The Bethany College baseball team is going through
a period of inconsistency of late. With a 12-15 overall record and
a 2-4 mark in the KCAC, the Swedes are in the heart of the conference schedule
and in need of a complete performance.
Friday last week in the first of two consecutive
conference doubleheaders, Bethany travelled to Kansas Wesleyan University
- where the Swedes were razor-sharp in game one. Led by a superb
pitching performance from senior Clay Witt (3-3), who allowed only three
hits through seven innings, Bethany tallied a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes.
Sophomore Jeremy Cantrell retired the last batter in the seventh inning
to record his first save of the season.
Game two was a different story. Bethany managed
only four hits while giving up 10 runs, en route to a 10-1 defeat.
Losing pitcher for Bethany was freshman Clint Strassburg (3-3), who was
not helped by six Bethany errors.
Saturday saw the Swedes travel to Ottawa University
for another conference doubleheader. In the first game the Swedes
earned an 8-7 victory in a very tight ball game. Cantrell was the
winning pitcher while Witt earned the save.
Unfortunately for Bethany, game two proved to be
a carbon copy of the previous day. Behind a flurry of hits Ottawa
dominated, winning 11-1. Losing pitcher for Bethany was transfer
Chris Bernal.
"Both days turned out to be exactly the same," said
head coach Mike Waldie. "We played very well in the first games behind
some great pitching, but somewhere in that 20 minutes between games our
guys seem to get lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Our pitching, hitting,
and defense just haven't been the same. Somehow we need to find a
way to stay focused for 14 innings. It's disappointing to have such
contrasting performances. We have a very good baseball team, we just
need to stay focused," Waldie said.
This week Bethany will travel to Kansas State University
to face the Wildcats in a nine inning affair. Then Saturday, the
Swedes will travel to Friends University for a conference doubleheader.
