CHERRYBROOK BULLDOGS HISTORY

CHERRYBROOK BULLDOGS LEAGUE SEASON 9

Season 9 was the longest ever, drawn out due to university, sporting commitments and renovations to the playing venue (the Wilson's garage), all of which led to the decline of the Club. The season lasted from February 1996 until August 1998.

The season looked like it was going to be the closest ever when in the first few weeks with Richard, Nick and Anthony all drawing with each other in their games. Nick rushed to a head start with some convincing wins over Alex, Steve and Adrian.

Richard was also in the running with a win over Adrian and when Anthony beat Nick, he saw the chance to catch up, but was disappointed to lose to Steve by a single early goal, and gained 2 yellow cards in the process. Adrian had three 2-2 draws in one day against Nick, Anthony and Steve. After a 4 month delay, Nick stayed in the lead with a 1-1 draw against Richard, but more delays were to come.

In September 1997, the first league matches since July 1996 were played. Nick extended his lead at the top with a 2-1 victory over Steve and an 8-3 win over Alex. Richard looked to be the main challenger with a 1-0 win over Anthony, he was only 7 points behind Nick with 3 games in hand, in third place behind Adrian. Nick had finished all of his matches, so his fate was to be determined by other results. The wait to see if he would win his first ever league title lasted and agonising 11 months.

For Richard, three wins would guarantee him the title, two wins and a draw would also give him a chance depending on goal difference. He won the first game, but then lost 2-3 to Adrian, throwing away any chance of catching up. Nick had won his first league title. Richard went on to beat Steve 1-0 to move into second place above Adrian on goal difference.

It was a very lengthy, but competitive season. Only 7 points separated first from fifth place, with Alex finishing sixth with no points.

BULLDOGS LEAGUE CUP SEASON 9

League Cup 9 suffered the same fate as the League with other commitments taking priority.

Group A took a relatively short 3 months to complete. Adrian got off to a good start with an impressive 3-0 victory over Steve. Nick finished on top, unbeaten without conceding a goal against Steve and Adrian. He had to wait for Group B to finish before finding out who he would face in the Semi-Finals.

Group B took over 2½ years to complete. Richard got off to a good start with a 2-1 victory over Anthony in 1996, but after waiting over 2 years for his next game went down 2-1 in a shock loss to Alex. It wasn't until January 1999 when Anthony finally got to play Alex and won 4-1 to go top of the group on goal difference.

With the final places decided, Nick faced Richard in the first of the Semi-Finals and won 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller.

Anthony's match against Adrian was put on hold while both were travelling overseas and is yet to be played. Stay tuned…(?)
