Diego Segui's First Pitch

The new owners, one of whom was Hollywood legend Danny Kaye, would hope that this team would fair better than the Pilots with brand new domed stadium. On August 24th the name "Mariners" became official after a "Name the Team Contest" was held. Soon after their first manager was named. Darrell Johnson came over from managing the Boston Red Sox for the last 2 1/2 seasons. By November the two new teams held the expansion draft. Among those selected by Seattle were outfielder Ruppert Jones from Kansas City, second baseman Julio Cruz and pitcher Glenn Abbott. The first Mariner trade was on December 7th when they traded pitcher Grant Jackson, whom they drafted in November, to Pittsburg for shortstop Craig Reynolds and second baseman Jimmy Sexton.

On April 6th the Mariners made their debut with 57,762 cheering fans. The opening day pitcher to face the California Angels was also a former Pilot, Diego Segui. Unfortunately the fans would go away seeing the Mariners lose in a 7-0 shutout. On July 19th Ruppert Jones became the first representative to the All-Star team. At the game he pitch-hits and flies out to Dave Parker in Yankee Stadium. The National League went on to win 7-5. On October 3rd the team finishes their first year going 64-98, in sixth place 1/2 game ahead of the A's.
