The John McGraw League Championship Series
The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres four games to two to win the John McGraw League Championship Series. The Dodgers will face the winner of the Connie Mack League Championship Series between the Montreal Expos and New York Mets in the 1995 Molson Baseball League World Series.
The McGraw CS proved, yet again, the old proverb that "Good pitching beats good hitting." The Dodgers posted a team ERA of 1.87 during the six-game series, including shutouts in games two and five. In a rematch of game one starters, game five was one for the record books as rookie Hideo Nomo no-hit the Padres for a 1-0 victory while outdueling David Wells. Only an error by Chad Fonville prevented the perfect game. For the series, the Dodgers held the Padres to a team batting average of .165 --- well below their season average of .280.
"They outpitched and outfielded us, plain and simple," said Padre manager Tom Herr after the clinching loss in game six. "They are truly the better team and I'd have to favor them to win it all."
Despite his near-perfect game, Nomo was beat out by teammate David Cone for the series MVP award. Cone (2-0, 0.50 ERA, 5 hits in 18 innings) pitched brilliantly in two games, both important victories for the Dodgers. After losing the first game of the series in Los Angeles, he made sure the Dodgers would head south even in the series by throwing a shutout in game two. Fittingly, he recorded the final out of the series after throwing a four-hitter against a powerful Padre lineup. "It speaks volumes about the depth of our pitching when someone throws a no-hitter and is beaten out by another starting pitcher for the MVP award," noted Dodger skipper Ken Phelps.
Game six was historic for another reason as it marked the final game of Kirby Puckett's career. "I obviously would have preferred to go out with a ring," noted Puckett, "but you have to hand it to the Dodgers. There's no break when you have to face Nomo, Cone, Valdes, and PJ [Martinez]." Puckett will reportedly be offered a position in the San Diego front office.

Wells, Padres defeat Nomo, Dodgers for Series Lead
The first game featured a classic pitcher's duel between Padre starter David Wells (1-0) and the Dodger's rookie phenom Hideo Nomo (0-1). Each side only allowed three hits. A John Valentin home run to center in the top of the fifth, the first hit off of Nomo, would prove to be all the Padres would need. Ron Gant would single home Tony Gwynn for another Padre run in the eigth inning. Wells' only real test came in the eigth when facing a 1st-and-3rd situation with one out he got Devon White to ground into a double play.
The underdog Padres led the series, 1-0.

The Dodgers got things off to a quick start against Ramon Martinez (0-1) by plating four runs, two unearned, in the third inning. The Padres left their bats on the bus as David Cone (1-0) allowed only a single to Roberto Alomar in the fifth. Alomar also proved to be the only runner to go past first in the entire game. Dodger all-star Mike Piazza had three of the Dodgers' nine hits including a home run in the seventh inning.
After trading shutouts, the series then moved south tied 1-1.

Padre Bats Awaken in Victory
The first game in San Diego featured Mexican Ismael Valdes (0-1) against crowd-favorite Scott Sanders (1-0). The sellout crowd at the Murph cheered loud and often for Sanders as he doubled and pitched the Padres to victory. Valdes was shunned by the other members of the Dodger staff after surrendering 10 hits and 6 runs in only five innings of work. The Padres went up 6-1 in the fourth inning and never looked back.
League batting champion Tony Gwynn went 3-4 while teammates Ron Gant, Fred McGriff and Matt Williams each had a pair of hits for San Diego.
The Padres led the series 2-1 with two to play at home.

Dodgers Hammer Benes
The Dodgers, after a blistering speech by manager Ken Phelps, proved they are not a one-dimensional team in game four by blasting the Padres, 10-1. Pedro J. Martinez (1-0), brother of the Padres' Ramon Martinez, threw a complete game with 8 strikeouts and no walks. Padre starter Andy Benes (0-1) was hammered for seven runs and didn't make it out of the second inning. This one was never close and, in retrospect, seemed to demoralize the underdog Padres.
The Dodgers, rebounding from their early series deficit, had tied the series 2-2 and looked forward to the rematch of game one starters Nomo and Wells.

Nomo No-Hits the Padres
The Padres' last home game of the year proved to be one that will be remembered by baseball fans for years to come. The Dodgers' Hideo Nomo (1-1), infuriated by his team's 2-0 loss in game one, made sure he would not disappoint the Japanese media twice by pitching a no-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and faced only one over the minimum. Nomo was prevented from a perfect game only by a Chad Fonville error on pitcher David Wells' (1-1) batted ball in the third.
Tom Herr was nearly speechless after the game. "That was the best game I've seen pitched against any of my teams in all my years of coaching. To do it against our lineup --- Gwynn, Williams, Ron [Gant], Robby [Alomar], Valentin, and McGriff --- that's simply incredible."
The Padres, scoreless in 17 innings and now trailing in the series 3-2, would have to travel back to Los Angeles and face David Cone, the man who one-hit them in game two.

Dodgers, behind Cone, Win Pennant!
Although the Padres quadrupled their offensive performance in terms of hits against Cone from game two, they could still produce only one run and Cone (2-0) clinched the pennant for the Dodgers, the second in their illustrious history. Ramon Martinez (0-2), although he pitched better than in game two, took the loss for San Diego. Mike Piazza hit his second home run of the series in the bottom of the second to put Los Angeles ahead, 1-0, but most Dodger fans unfortunately were not there to see it since they arrived in the third. Dodger firstbaseman Rafael Palmeiro's one-out fifth-inning single scored LF Tom Goodwin for what proved to be the series-clinching run.
The Dodgers had clinched the series and began to wait for the first game of the World Series against either Montreal or the New York Mets. The Dodgers will enjoy home-field advantage in the World Series.
