Game One: Devils 2, Capitals
1
Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford,
New Jersey
New Jersey leads series, 1-0
The inaugural championship game in
Molson Hockey League history was an exciting matchup that featured the
two best teams in the regular season --- the New Jersey Devils and Washington
Capitals. Before a sell-out crowd, the host Devils prevailed, 2-1,
behind the goaltending of Martin Brodeur and a second period goal by Doug
Gilmour. The game was cleanly played, featuring only four minutes
of penalties on each side.
"Marty [Brodeur] was the difference
for us tonight," New Jersey owner Bryan Sakolsky said. "He was superb
and really gave us a lot of confidence out there. It is nice to get
the first win, especially since we're on home ice."
"We have got to find a way to beat
that trap," Capital John LeClair observed, "if we're going to have a chance
in the series. We'll shoot for a split here before heading home."
The Devils were very effective screening
Capital netminder Sean Burke, but only managed to score twice. New
Jersey, for its part, knew they would have to do better if their hopes
for a Molson Cup were to be realized...

Game Two: Devils 7, Capitals 1
Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey
New Jersey leads series, 2-0
The New Jesey Devils roared past the Washington Capitals
by a score of 7-1 in game two to assume a 2-0 series lead. New Jersey,
which led 2-1 at the first intermission, scored twice in the middle frame
and three times in the final twenty minutes to inflict the worst loss in
franchise and Molson Cup Finals history upon Washington. Devils center
Doug Gilmour led the charge with two goals (his second and third of the
series) and an assist while defenseman Scott Stevens tallied three points.
"Without question, that was the worst performance I have
ever seen out of Sean [Burke]," Washington coach Ron Wilson stated following
the debacle. "We simply cannot afford to fall behind the Devils,
not the way Marty has been playing for them. Sean has got to step
up and make some stops for us or this will be a very short series."
Burke's lackluster effort seemed to demoralize the Capitals,
but their offense was equally guilty after being held to a single goal
for the second consecutive game. For his part, Burke failed to stop
a single quality chance. The Capitals, struggling to get the puck
into the offensive zone, were only able to generate three quality chances
against Brodeur.
The series then shifted to Washington for games three
and four...

Game Three: Capitals 2, Devils 1 (OT)
MCI Center, Washington, District of Columbia
New Jersey leads series, 2-1
The Washington Capitals overcame a game two embarassment
and all-world play by New Jersey's Martin Brodeur to win game three, 2-1,
at 15:40 of the first overtime period on a goal by enforcer Chris Simon.
Simon's goal, assisted by Sergei Federov and Sylvain Cote, was initially
stopped by Brodeur, but he could not control the puck and it slid past
him into the net. An exhausted Capitals bench emptied onto the ice
in front of 20,236 cheering fans --- an MCI Center record.
"I didn't think we'd ever get another one past him," Simon
said, referring to the Devils' netminder. "I have never seen anyone
play as well as he did tonight. He was unbelieveable. He was
the opposite of Sean's game two effort!"
Capitals coach Ron Wilson was equally complimentary of
Brodeur, the Devils' MVP.
"If the Vezina or Conn Smythe were based on one game,
he'd be a shoo in. I never saw as strong a performance all year.
To post ten spectacular saves against the likes of LeClair, Bondra, Fedy
and Gretz ... you had to see it to believe it."
Brodeur got little help from his forwards as the Capitals
defense, embarassed by their game two lapses, controlled the pace of play
in their own zone. Capitals goalie Sean Burke, who failed to stop
a single scoring chance in the 7-1 debacle, faced only two difficult shots
all evening. After Hamrlik put the Devils ahead, 1-0, at 3:33 of
the first, there were some calls heard from the fans to make a switch in
net.
"Olie is ready to step in as needed," Wilson said, "but
Sean has been our best goalie all year. He has been inconsistent,
but we're going to stick with him."
Washington's frustration from the first two contests was
apparent in the first period. Ten minors and two majors were issued
by referee Don Koharski, including two minors to Washington center Wayne
Gretzky.
This game was one for the ages. The MCI Center crowd
will not soon forget the spectacular netminding of Martin Brodeur.
Equally oustanding, Sean Burke stopped his first quality chance of the
series, breaking a zero-for-nine start.

Game Four: Capitals 6, Devils 2
MCI Center, Washington, District of Columbia
Series tied, 2-2
The Capitals built upon the positive experience of Chris
Simon's overtime winner in game three to post a 6-2 thrashing of visiting
New Jersey to even the Molson Cup finals at two games apiece. John
LeClair had two goals and an assist to earn the first star of the evening
as five different Capitals registered goals against a bewildered Martin
Brodeur. The series shifts back to the swamp for game five before
returning to MCI Center for game six.
"The Devils have been exorcised," Washington captain Dale
Hunter said. "That game two loss really had us doubting ourselves, but
we've now proven that we can beat Brodeur and those other guys that play
with him. We needed two wins at home, and we got 'em."
For the second straight contest, the Devils failed to
keep Capitals clear from the front of the net. Brodeur faced ten
quality chances, stopping four.
Surprisingly, the Capitals were rated poor in each performance
area whereas the Devils received two "excellent" ratings alongside Brodeur's
"good."
"The critics be damned, we won the game," Ron Wilson said.
Sean Burke Watch: another game with no spectacular saves
puts him at 2-for-14 on the series.

Game Five: Devils 4, Capitals 3 (2OT)
Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey
New Jersey leads series, 3-2
The Devils, led by Brodeur, responded to the consecutive
Washington victories in games three and four by winning game five, 4-3,
in double overtime. Brian Rolston ended play with a goal at 7:15
of the second overtime period. Nonetheless, it was Martin Brodeur,
who stonewalled eight of eleven quality chances by the Capitals, who justifiably
earned the first star for the game.
"What can you say," a frustrated Ron Wilson commented
after the game suddenly ended on Rolston's marker. "Our forwards
outchanced the Devils, were able to generate excellent scoring opportunities,
but just couldn't convert past Brodeur. We'll have to put this one
behind us, but it hurts knowing we were leading 2-0 and let them back in
it."
New Jersey owner Bryan Sakolsky was excited about the
prospect of winning the inaugural Molson Cup in Washington in game six.
"I used to live in Washington and would love to finish
off the Capitals there. Additionally, MCI stocks are running higher
than those of Continental, and I have a lot more invested there."

Game Six: Capitals 3, Devils 2
MCI Center, Washington, District of Columbia
Series tied, 3-3
Facing elimination, the Capitals raced out to a 3-0 lead
and held on to tie the series, 3-3, by posting a 3-2 victory today.
As usual, Martin Brodeur gave the Devils a chance to win by stopping four
of seven quality chances. For his part, Capital netminder Sean Burke
failed to stop anything other than shots from the blueline. Luckily
for Washington, the Devils could only manage 14 shots on goal.
"It is apparent that we win only if we keep New Jersey
away from the front of the net," Ron Wilson said. "Sean's play has
been inadequate. We'll need more from him if we're to win game seven
in the swamp."
Burke, for the series, had stopped just 6 of 20 quality
scoring chances. In comparison, Martin Brodeur was successful in
blocking 31 of 47 quality chances by Washington.

Game Seven: Devils 1, Capitals 0 (OT)
Continental Airlines Arena, East Rutherford, New Jersey
New Jersey wins championship, 4-3
The series finale was an appropriate snapshot of the previous
games: a dominant goaltender, unbalanced offensive chances, and a tightly
matched contest. Ironically, it was Sean Burke who would be the first
star of the game, posting 9 spectacular saves, but nonetheless coming up
short as former Capital Rick Tocchet scored at 10:30 of overtime to clinch
the series for New Jersey, 1-0.
"It felt great to win the Cup," Tocchet said, "but I never
played in a game for Washington, so there really wasn't much added incentive
there. They traded me before the inaugural draft last year, so I
hadn't really gotten to know any of the guys."
New Jersey dominated play in the overtime period, putting
six shots on net while blanking the Capitals. Although trying to
screen Brodeur, the Devils were very efficient at clearing the area in
front of the crease throughout the game.
"Wow," was Capitals coach Ron Wilson's initial statement
following the game. "What can I say? Tonight our offense was
shut down, but Burke really responded to that talk we had following game
six. We were simply unable to muster any attack and equally piss
poor at defending our own end. Without Sean, this one would have
ended much earlier."

Closing Thoughts
The inaugural Molson Cup Finals was a fitting end to a positive
season for the upstart league. The Finals pitted the teams with the
best regular season records in a series which will be remembered as one
of the greatest in Molson Hockey League history. Aside from blowouts
in games two and four, each game of the series was decided by a lone goal
--- three of those in overtime.
New Jersey netminder Martin Brodeur was clearly the most
valuable player of the series. He singlehandedly kept the Devils
in several games in which they were outplayed offensively, stopping 33
of 49 Washington scoring chances for the series. His counterpart,
Sean Burke, finished with a respectable 15-for-30 ratio based solely upon
his effort in the finale.
Congratulations to
the 1997-1998 Molson Cup Champions,
the

JERSEY DEVILS
