The Ohio State women's club ice hockey team won the Central College Women's Hockey
Association (CCWHA) tournament this weekend by beating the University of Michigan in the
final game, and in doing so, received a bid to the national women's tournament this April.
"We would have received the invitation to the tournament anyway because we won nationals the
last year it was held," said Jennifer Bradbury, the president of the club. "But it was great to beat
Michigan."
The Women's College Club Hockey Association (WCCHA) national tournament will be held at
Ohio State on April 18 through April 20. Coach Karen Karamanoukian said the tournament will
consist of six teams: three teams from the East, two from the Midwest and one from the West
Coast.
The team won the regional tournament last weekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., by winning five games.
They beat Michigan State, the University of Wisconsin, Lake Forest College, the University of
Illinois and in the final, the University of Michigan 6-2. The team's top scorers over the weekend
were Karamanoukian with 15 points, Becca Nally with 14 points and Amy Mulvey with 13 points.
The team finished the regular season with a 12-1-1 record. Karamanoukian said this is the sixth
year for women's club ice hockey and they are hoping to get varsity status in the near future.
Bradbury said the cost of playing is very expensive for each of the members. Members must pay
for ice time (around $60 per quarter), all equipment (up to $1000) and travel expenses.
Bradbury said there are currently about 60 girls playing for Ohio State on two teams, a beginner team and a more advanced squad.
