More Miscellaneous Cricket Trivia:
Once every two years England
and Australia play a test series, alternately in England and Australia, called
the 'Ashes'. They came to be called the 'Ashes' when in Australia first beat England
in England, and the bails used were burned, and their ashes were preserved. These
ashes are stored at the cricket museum at Lord's cricket ground in London, and
a replica of their container serves as a reward for the 'Ashes'.
In the 1932-33 Ashes the
English captain Douglas Jardine instructed his fast bowlers to aim for the batsmens'
bodies in order to prevent them from scoring runs. This was termed as 'Bodyline'.
He succeeded in limiting the Australian batsman, but he became one of the most
despised men in the cricket world.
Only two test matches
have ever been tied. The first one - Australia versus West Indies, and the second
- Australia versus India. West Indies once beat Australia by 1 run.
Saurav Ganguly(India) is
the only crickter to have won four consecutive man of the match awards in one-day
internationals.
The Hadlee family has served
New Zealand cricket well. Sir Richard Hadlee has captained New Zealand in test
cricket. He held the world record for the highest number of test wickets, 431 until
he was surpassed by Kapil Dev(India). His brother Dayle, and father Walter also
played cricket for New Zealand. And that's not all. His wife has also represented
New Zealand in women's cricket.
Today Steve and Mark Waugh(Australia)
are two of the most prolific batsmen in world cricket. They are also twins. Steve
played for Australia long before Mark made it to the team. When Mark finally played
for Australia it was Steve who had been dropped to make room for Mark. Steve was
given the job of informing Mark.
C.B. Fry(England) has not
only captained England in cricket, but has represented England in football, and
once equaled the world long-jump record.
The only person to win
the man of the match award for captaincy was Bob Willis(England) in a one-day international.
England once scored 903
for 7 declared against Australia, and went on to beat them by an innings and
579 runs, the largest ever margin of victory in a test match.
Sri Lanka toured Australia
in 1996-97 for a test series. In the entire test series 15 batsmen were given out
leg before wicket - 13 Sri Lankans and 2 Australians. The 2 Australians were both
given out by the third country umpire, not the Australian umpire.
