Des performed exceptionally well posting an impressive season`s best of 3.43.84 in Cottbus, Germany.At the nationals he grabbed bronze with a fantastic finish to get ahead of the much fancied Andrew Walker.In a slow and tactical race Des showed he could compete with athletes over 10 years younger than him.Even though this years field lacked the quality of previous years this medal was a deserved one as Des has been a loyal servant to Irish athletics over the years which is shown by his ranking of 11th in this years National ranking list over 1500m.
He can enter the new season knowing that he has gained respect among his peers as was proved by the Irish Middle-Distance Athlete of the Year Poll
where he was voted number two in the Best National Athlete section and number two again in Most Improved Athlete
