Good performances from Lilley, Reale, and Sweeney

Santiago , Chile was the venue for the World Junior Championships where some of Ireland`s brightest propects were in action. In the middle-distance events Ireland was well represented with Tony Lilley from Togher, Conor Sweeney from St.Malachy`s and Liam Reale from Hospital all in action.

800m- Tony Lilley

First in action was Tony who ran over 800m.With his race on at 4.00 in the afternoon it was quite hot but Tony did himself proud by only narrowly missing out on a place in the semi-finals by .91 of a second as he finished 5th in his heat which was won by Antonio Reina from Spain in 1.50.84.The pace , as with all the other heats , was moderate to start with as USA`s Nick Devenport led the field through in 55.43.Tony stuck onto the back of the leading pack as the other two competitors behind him drop away.As the pace picked up in the last 150 Tony stuck gamefully to his task of finishing in the first 3 but he couldn`t get up to do it but should be proud of his performance.

1500m- Conor Sweeney

A Strong performance from Sweeney was not enough to progress
Conor Sweeney was in action on Friday the 20th October and despite being ranked 7th in the Junior European Ranking list over 1500m could not progress out of his heat.He ,like Tony , missed out by a small margin, only .39.Conor can only be disappointed, not with his performance but with his luck! The race was won by Kenyan Philemon Kibet in 3.46.53 with Conor back in 5th in 3.47.98, his second fastest time of the year.It was a promising performance from Conor who will be on his way to Loughborough on scholarship during down offers from US colleges which included Vilanova. 3000m Steepelchase- Liam Reale

The ultra-talented Reale is one for the future
Liam Reale can come away from Chile happy but disappointed. His performances this yar have been a revalation with huge PB s over 1500m flat, 1500m steeplechase, 2000m steeplechase and 3000m steeplechase. His prgression has continued at a fantastic rate after his 4th place in the World Youth Championships in Poland in 1999.He can also know that to progress beyond the first round he would have had to run a 15 second personal best.He might be disappointed with the fact that his time was 15 seconds off his personal best but he gave it his all and is a huge talent for the future and will be eligable for the next World Championships in 2 years. He finished in 12th place out of 14 finishers in a time of 9.24.28. He can look forward to a bright career as many US colleges have showed interest. They include Harvard, and Providence.Heat 2 - Wednesday, October 18, 2000 - 18:05
