Next weekend sees the staging of the Orange Tenpin Bowling Association Junior Championships which have been moved to the earlier part of the year, as was the case in the mid eighties, to avoid a clash with the adult Championships which remain in their usual September slot.

The junior Championships will start next Friday with a teams squad. Singles, doubles, mixed doubles and further teams events on the Saturday and Sunday.

The third annual Junior Gutterstopper Championships will be bowled on 21 March. Here will be separate boys and girls divisions with the winners receiving a printed shirt and a trophy with trophies also going to the minor placegetters.

The New South Wales Junior State Championships are also on the horizon with competition running from 28 March to 5 April at the Bankstown Tenpin Bowl.

In other upcoming news, the New South Wales Walter de Veer team roll-offs will be held at Bathurst next Sunday.

Also coming up is the 1999 New South Wales Country Tenpin Open on 10-11 April. The Open replaces last year's one-day Orange Cup with this year's format reverting to that of the former Orange Open. The tournament has attracted a number of sponsors in the Mid City Motor Lodge, Coca-Cola, OBS Bowling Supplies and Central West Trophies.

Players will roll ten games on the Saturday with the top 32 players returning on Sunday for a further six games of competition. The field is cut further to the top ten who will bowl another four games before the top five move into a stepladder final.

This year's Open has a total of $5,870 in prizemoney with the winner taking home $1,000 cash, a trophy, a shirt and free entry into the year 2000 Open. Cash prizes are paid down to 20th place.

Junior bowler Michael Dinsmore is this week's star player from the Orange Tenpin Bowl with a brilliant 221 game in the Wednesday Juniors which was a phenomenal 116 pins over average! Dinsmore rolled a five bagger as part of his personal best game.

As is the case most weeks, Mark Lijic was in sensational form yet again, rolling a blistering 719 series in the Friday Triples with games of 216-236-267. He fronted again for the Monday Scratch Singles and extended his lead in that league with a 1248 six game effort. Lijic started well with 234-214-208-214 for 870 in the first games before going off the boil slightly in the final two games.

James Dubbelde did well in that league rolling 245 early the finishing solidly with 205-234-204 for 1229/6. Jason "Chuck" Brown fired 214-201-204-235 for a 1219/6 series that included 640/3.

Jason Belmonte was the fourth player to average over 200 on the night, tossing 220-201-265 (686/3) at the start and then a closing 228 for 1246/6.

Other notable efforts weer bowled by June Reil 200-203-224 (618/3), Steve Reil 246-207-209 (637/3), Wally Price 213, Chris Collins 249-216 (640/3), Tim Irwin 201 and Joe Werner 211.

David Rosser topped the scoring in the Thursday Singles with 807/4 a scant one pin ahead of Jim Dullaway. Rosser fired games of 209-215 while the consistent Dullaway's lone 200 game was a 218.

Other good scores came from Bindi Irwin 211, Greg Perry 222-203 and Ken Wiseman 200.

Judging by the huge output of scores every week in the Friday Triples it seems hard not to roll a big game. Following in Mark Lijic's wake this week were bowlers of the calibre of Steve Reil who had a hot 692 series of his own that included 253-2240215.

Also cracking 600 were Jason Belmonte 213-216 (628), David Hayward 226-204 (616), Tim Irwin 257-203 (650), Tony Richards 211-213 (602) and Ray Tyquin 245-210-207 (662).

Other top games were bowled by Renae Caltabiano 214-214, Lyn Handel 214, Mario Mastronardi 205, Henry Phillips 202-213 and David Rosser 225.

Tony Irwin shot a 215 game in the Sunday Singles while Joanne Sullivan had a 201 in the Sunday Sabbath league. Keith Bugden bowled a 204 in the Monday 10am league while Kiel Bugden rolled a nice 235 in an un-named league.

The Tuesday Ladies Singles saw Gwen Britt shoot a lane record 265 game plus a 202 and a 184 all-spare game while Dianne Gee tossed a six bagger in her 221 game while she also had a 203. Marilyn Schwenke rolled a 235 while Naurelle Smith bowled 218.

Guy Taylor 180, Samantha Yates 107, Anne Ward 152, Matthew Ripps 157 and Elizabeth Holle 143 bowled personal best games this week.
