After his Country Challenge commitments this weekend, David Hayward heads to the Canberra International Bowl in Tuggeranong over the Easter break to compete in the 17th annual National Deaf Championships from 2-6 April.

Hayward has had great success at the Deaf Nationals over the past four or five years, arguably stamping himself as Australia's best deaf player.

This year he will be hunting for titles in singles, doubles and teams events as well as the Individual Championship and Masters both of which he has won before.

Hayward bowled well on his previous outing at the new Tuggeranong Bowl, averaging 197 in the first round of the Country Challenge, so will go into the championships with great confidence.

The Easter weekend also sees the conclusion of the New South Wales Junior State Championships at the Bankstown Bowl where Orange will be well represented. The Championships start this weekend and wind up with the staging of the Challenge Shield next Sunday and the State Junior Masters on the Monday.

The 1999 New South wales Country Tenpin Open is the other major event coming up and will be held in Orange on 10-11 April with a number of local bowlers expected to perform strongly.

Entry forms are now out for the Anzac day Singles Fun Day tournament to be held a day after Anzac Day, on 26 April.

The event will be bowled over eight games using four different formats - seven no-tap, eight no-tap, 3-6-9 frames and 11th frame games.

Alcoholic prizes are up for grabs this year with the winner taking home a carton of beer, bottle of bourbon and bottle of wine.

The annual Gutterstopper Championships were held at the Bowl last Sunday with victory going to Amanda Harvey and Mathew Cox.

Amanda Harvey rolled 292 scratch for the three games which converted to a handicap total of 667 which saw her comfortably hold off the challenge from Nicky Meyers who shot 638.

Just behind Meyers in third spot was Jessi Channon with 635 while behind them in a tight bunch were Sandy Meyers (630), Tania Caltabiano 628, Natasha Lijic, Leigha Aurisch and a number of others. Aurisch finished second in last year's event.

In the boys' division, Mathew Cox bowled 346 scratch or 682 with handicap to just edge Rod Qummou on 677. Not far behind that pair were Joseph Fedele while the next ten players finished with a couple of spares of each other in a very close finish.

Rounding out the top ten were Jeremy Mason, Jason Shield, Adam Liu, Bryan Clements, Brendan Cox, Zac Bell and Adam Jones.
