Fast Lane

The Anzac Day Singles tournament will be held at the Orange Tenpin Bowl on Monday, commencing at 9:30am.

The eight-game tournament will use four different formats, with players rolling two games under each format.

First off there is a seven no-tap segment followed by an eight no-tap block. Under those high-scoring formats bowlers need knock down the minimum nominated number of pins (seven or eight respectively) to be credited with a strike.

The next two games will use the 3-6-9 format where players receive an automatic strike in those three frames while the closing block is a 11th frame game where players get an extra frame which can be substituted for any other in that particular game.

The winner will be doing plenty of celebrating, as they will receive a carton of beer, bottle of bourbon and a bottle of wine.

The Orange Tenpin Bowling Association Junior Disco and Presentation Night will be held at the Bowl tonight. For further details please contact the Bowl this morning.

Meanwhile, at the Manhattan Super Bowl in Mascot this weekend, the 1999 Super Classic will be contested with the winner taking home $15,000.

There are also some lucrative incentives with a million dollars on offer for any bowler who can roll back-to-back 300 games. With a high-calibre international field competing that is not as impossible as it sounds.

Back in Orange, the 1999 Orange City Masters will be held next Sunday (May 2) in male and female open and restricted divisions.

Winners will gain entry into the 1999 New South Wales State Masters in June and also receive a bowling shirt and entry to the 2000 Masters.

The second round of the 1999 Central West Pennants series was held last Sunday with Dubbo and Bathurst sharing the honours, winning six divisions each.

The Bathurst men's number ones, who defeated Orange in round one, also proved too good for Dubbo, winning by 6 points with Theo Klaassens topping the averages on 183.

The Dubbo Ladies won the number one division, inflicting Bathurst's second straight loss for the year. Leanne Everitt did best for Dubbo with a 188 average.

The next Pennants round will be bowled on May 16 with Orange taking on Dubbo. The Pennants will be preceded by the third round of the South West Country Challenge on May 8-9.

The cream of this week's bowling crop was Jason Belmonte who rolled a 289 game in the first game of the Monday Scratch Singles.

Belmonte looked set for a 300 game when he opened with ten strikes before leaving a solid ten pin on his eleventh shot. He rolled 200-224 in his next two games for an excellent 713 three game series and finished the evening with a 200 game for a 1274/6 series.

James Dubbelde was in great form in the same league, posting games of 248-204-235 for a 1254/6 series that included 882/4.

Les Gunner also bounced back to his best with a solid 1248/6 block that included games of 223-235-215-212.

After a slow start New South Wales Country Open runner-up Mark Lijic finished well with games of 210-200-203-257 (870/4) for a 1233/6 series.

Other high games on the night were supplied by David Rosser 246-221 (639/3), Jason Osborne 246-223-212 (681/3), Wally Price 226-218-201-222 (867/4), Chris Collins 235-214-233 (863/4) and Tim Irwin 235. Melanie Brown had one flash of brilliance with a great 267 game.

It was probably the highest scoring night in the league's history with four players shooting over 1200 and three others coming within one spare of also doing so.

The Friday Triples also had a very high-scoring night and saw a plethora of top games led by a personal best 279 from John Cooney who crashed back to earth with his second game but recovered for a 204 in the next and a 621 series.

A total of eight players managed to bowl a 600 series, topped by a 650 from Mark Lijic who bowled games of 216-240. Jason Osborne bowled solidly in his first two games before powering home with a 267 for a 645 block.

Ross Caltabiano had a 247-225 opening pair but crashed badly on his third game and had to settle for a 631 series while Jason Belmonte started with a 239 and rolled 614/3.

Other to crack 600 were Warren Handel 234-205 (601), Tim Irwin 214-227 (639) and Henry Phillips who was the most consistent player with 223-200-204 (627).

Others worthy of a mention were Aldo Belmonte 216, Les Gunner 201 and Jason Brown 201.

Brown was in good touch in the centre's other high-scoring league, the Wednesday 6:30 Doubles with 200-279-213 for a hot 692 series. Henry Phillips was still in consistent form with 215-226-214 for a 655 block while John Cooney also maintained the form with 252-200.

Other good games were bowled by Marilyn Schwenke 201, Mick Moorby 204, Dianne Gee 202-210, John Rapley 226, Glenn Robinson 200 and Wally Price 227.

Scott Frecklington rolled a 203 game in the Wednesday 10am league just pipping a 202 by Sharon Straney while high games in the Wednesday 7:30 league included Tim Irwin 228, Ian Carr 220 and Tony Knudsen 216.

The Tuesday Ladies Singles stars this week were Karen Sharp 205, Sharon Trudgett 200, Maree Brown 201, Melanie Brown 211 and Lyn Handel 203.

The Sunday Restricted Singles saw high games from Trevor Auliff 202, Gary Johnson 204, Adam Richards 208, Johnathon Thatcher 202, Bob Waddell 203, Tony Irwin 217 and Frank McGovern 212.

Waddell and Johnson also featured in the later Sabbath League with 230 and 212 respectively while Will Harvey shot 217 and Chris "XPT" Fuller bulleted down a 214 game.

Other top games this week came from Tennille Smith who was "captain" of the Tuesday 6:30 league (sorry about that awful pun!) with a 201 game and Allan Kinghorne who shot a 223 in the Friday 6:30 league. Gus Rodriguez bowled a 209 game in the Monday 6:30 league
