Although the end of the year is fast approaching, with Christmas just under five weeks away, things haven't slowed down at the Orange Tenpin Bowl.

This weekend sees the Mid City Motor Lodge Orange Ladies Team travel to the Maitland Bowl to contest the state final of the Country Challenge series.

The top teams from the various zones around the state will meet in the final to decide the year's best team. Orange has an excellent chance of victory following their close second-placed finish in the South-West zone behind Bathurst after leading the competition for the majority of the year.

The following players will be representing Orange this weekend:

The Orange Tenpin Bowling Association Annual General Meeting will be held next Saturday while the popular annual barbecue/presentation day will be held Sunday.

The barbecue follows the staging of the 7th annual OTBA Adult-Junior Doubles tournament where a large field will line up with around twenty nominations to date.

The doubles tournament gets under-way at 9:30 am and will be bowled over four games with handicap. The winning duo will receive $100 with $50 for the runners-up and $25 for third.

Entry forms are now available for the tenth annual New South Wales Country Championships that will be held over two weekends at the Orange Tenpin Bowl from 30 January to 7 February next year.

The Country Championships, launched by the Orange Tenpin Bowling Association back in 1990, are proudly sponsored by the Orange City Council and Hansen's Optometrists and are open to adult and junior bowlers.

The 3
rd annual Ron Boulton Marine and Cycles and Harvey Norman 1998 Orange Junior Cup was held last Sunday with victory going to Jarrod Lean in the scratch division and Orange's Kiel Bugden in the handicap division.

The winners each received a mountain bike, junior cup trophy from Central West Trophies, a shirt and $200 cash while bowlers placed second through fourth took home electrical goods.

Jarrod Lean totally dominated the scratch section of the tournament, rolling 1734 for an eight game qualifying average of 216, well clear of other stepladder finalists Michael Frazi on 1650 (206 average), Mark Loader 1615 (201 average) and Orange's Jason Belmonte on 1600 (200 average).

Lean came out firing, leading most of the way after games of 238-224-214-253-213-212 then easing up in the last two games for 193-187.

Frazi started like a house on fire with 213-246-258 (717) then went cold before finishing with a 216 to ensure second place. Loader's best games in qualifying were 236-209-202-212-202 while Belmonte shot 204-212-201-224-213.

In the first game of the stepladder, Jason Belmonte threw eight strikes in his last nine shots to clinch a tough fought 235-200 victory over Mark Loader.

Belmonte then went up against Mike Frazi who started with a four bagger to set up a handy lead. Back-to-back opens late in the game gave Belmonte a chance but a split in the ninth frame saw his run come to an end as Frazi won 203-191.

The decider was a brilliant match as both players went strike for strike early, both rolling four baggers before Frazi misses in the sixth and eighth frames saw Lean take control, a double in the tenth punctuating an impressive 222-200 win.

Rounding out the top ten in the scratch division were Shaune Carriage, Michael Esler, Greg Perry (Orange), Adam Goldberg, Jason Brown (Orange) and Steve Streater.

lewis brooks photo The Central-West dominated the handicap division of the Orange Junior Cup, with Orange providing three of the four spots in the stepladder roll-offs and Bathurst the other.

Top qualifier was the inexperienced Lewis Brooks (pictured left) of Bathurst who set a new all events record in D grade in this year's Orange City Championships. Brooks did extremely well under the pressure of the situation and can hold his head high despite being beaten by Kiel Bugden in the stepladder decider.

In the first stepladder game fourth qualifier Becky Belmonte met Kristen Byrnes, getting off to a quick start and winning 210-181 with handicap.

Belmonte then faced Bugden and bowled fairly well but was no match for Bugden's closing five bagger, bowing out 262-197 with handicap.

Bugden was on a roll and an early double put him in command in the decider against Brooks. Brooks tried hard but Bugden didn't let him back in the match, staying clean for a 243-202 victory.

Other top ten finishers in the handicap section were Toni Brastings, Amanda Barrott, Chantelle Seers (Orange), Jeff Hunt (Orange), Samantha Fisher and Jarrod Lean.

A total of 48 juniors competed in the Cup with the tournament high game going to Michelle Tonks with a 260.

Other high games worth mentioning were bowled by Jason Brown 236, Becky Belmonte 211, Shaune Carriage 203-231-256 (690/3), Nathan Cox 222, Michael Esler 229, Adam Goldberg 254, (former Orange bowler) Elizabeth Hitman 211, Tony Livianiou 242, Glen Loader 220, Greg Perry 225-215 and Steve Streater 225.
