Orange's Melanie Brown scored a one pin victory in the girl's division while Gosford bowler Jarrod Lean scored his second successive win in the boy's division of the 4th Annual Ron Boulton Marine & Cycles and Harvey Norman Orange NSW Country Cup which was held at the Orange Tenpin Bowl last Sunday.
Lean upset tournament top qualifier Jason Belmonte in the final to capture his second successive title.
Melanie Brown averaged 176 in the eight game qualifying round with a best effort of 214 to land in third spot in the stepladder playoffs behind top seed Leanne Prenzel of Shellharbour who averaged 195 in qualifying after games of 221-266-203.
Orange's Rebecca Belmonte qualified second with a 190 average including games of 229-208 while claiming fourth in the stepladder was Belinda Irwin on a 174 average.
Brown and Irwin met in the first knockout match with Brown advancing 193-181 to set up a match with Belmonte. Brown prevailed in that game also, rolling a top 225 game to Belmonte's 179.
The decider went down to the wire with Brown scraping in 203-202 against Prenzel.
Finishing outside the top four were Amanda Barrott, Emma Herring, Toni Brasting, Tahnia Seers and Melissa Johnston.
Local hotshot Jason Belmonte had dominated the boy's qualifying round, averaging 215 to outdistance nearest rival Lean by a massive 157 pins. However, in the one game stepladder shootout Lean proved too good winning 210-194 with a ninth frame split putting paid to Belmonte's prospects.
Belmonte was on a mission in the qualifying section as he put together games of 209-230-202-223-264 (1128/5) before cruising across the line with 597 for his last three games. Lean started slowly but put together games of 234-225 at the end of qualifying just as Belmonte seemed to go of the boil.
Taking third place in the stepladder was Sydney's Michael Frazi (193 average) ahead of former local city champion Greg Perry 192 (average) who finished seventh in this event last year.
Perry fired a 214 at Frazi who was only able to counter with a 153. Perry wasn't able to reproduce that form against Lean however with the Gosford player winning easily 223-167 to move into the decider against Belmonte.
Missing the playoffs by just a spare was Joshua Dwyer while rounding out the top ten were Jai Prentice, Billy McGlashan, Scott Richards, Ryan Griffiths and Josh Singer.
Jai Prentice (Gosford) won the handicap division with a 215-190 victory over top seed Matthew Sing (Sydney). In the earlier rounds Fiona Smydzuk (Sydney) beat Joshua Dwyer (Corrimal) 239-195 before Prentice beat her 260-236.
The tournament, which again highlighted the cutthroat nature of stepladder finals where all three top qualifiers were beaten in the one match that counted, was a major success attracting a full field of 48 bowlers ranging in age from 11 to 18. Next year's tournament will be even bigger with a $1,000 boost in prizemoney, from the NSW State Junior Committee announced at the end of the tournament.
Special thanks to the two above-mentioned major sponsors who received naming rights as well as Central West Trophies and Brunswick Bowling Supplies. The ball from BBS was won by Darren Fisk who finished in 13th spot.
The state final of the Country Challenge will be held in Campbelltown this weekend with Orange represented in both the men's and women's divisions.
The President's Shield Central Zone roll-offs commence today at the Castle Hill Wondabowl with the finals to be bowled tomorrow and next weekend.
In upcoming events, the Orange Tenpin Bowling Association Annual General Meeting will be held next Saturday while the annual barbecue/presentation day will be held on the Sunday along with the OTBA Adult-Junior Doubles tournament.
