Brown resumes on familiar note

Bowlers are slowly getting back into the swing of things at the Orange Tenpin Bowl after the Christmas break with a couple of leagues re-commencing during the week with more to return in the upcoming week.

Jason Brown, after a fantastic year in 1998, is obviously out to make 1999 even better. After his perfect game in a recent practice session, mentioned in last week's column, "Chuck" got back to league action in the Wednesday Auto Style Doubles and rolled the high series of the week with a 658 trio that included games of 221-248.

Not far behind was Henry Phillips who shot games of 237-214 for a handy 634 series while other games of note were turned in by city champion John Cooney 218, Wally Price 202, David Hayward 204-212 and Dianne Gee 213.

Despite Jason Brown's excellent series, the honour of being the first bowler of the week for 1999 goes to Mick Moorby who rolled an personal best 253 game in the Friday Triples last week. No other scores from that usually high-scoring league were provided.

Qualifying continues for the annual Bob Jane T Mart and Harvey Norman Orange No-tap tournament with the final to be held next Sunday, 24 January.

The top ten at the time of writing was:

1 Jan Peters 1200
2 Leo McKay 1170
3 Frank McGovern 1131
4 Mark Lijic 1117
5 John Hayward 1097
6 Aaron Osborne 1073
7 Trevor Rowney 1064
8 David Rosser 1047
9 Jason Osborne 1033
10 Marie Rosser 1022

The top twenty players at the end of qualifying will contest the ten game final where the winner will receive a set of all rounder tyres valued at $400. The minor placegetters will receive electrical goods while all finalists will go into a draw for a Getaway holiday. As top qualifier, Jan Peters, with a perfect 1200 tally will gain free entry into the final.

A ten game roll-off to decide the seven-member (boys and girls) Western Warriors squad will take place tomorrow at the Dubbo Bowl.

The Western Warriors team will compete in the Challenge Shield during the New South Wales State Junior Championships at Easter.

Another event this weekend is the Liverpool Cup at Manhattan Bowl, Liverpool.

Adults can nominate for the New South Wales Walter de Veer team up until 20 February 1999. The Walter de Veer Trophy is part of the Australian National Championships and Orange bowlers Chris Collins and Jim Dullaway represented their state in the event this year.

The ten game roll-off will be held at Bathurst Bowl on 21 March 1999 with the top four players moving on to the state finals in Sydney next April. The state squad will then compete in the Nationals in Adelaide next October.

Bowlers must have an average of 180 and under for men or 170 and under for women to be eligible.

Players should check the nomination form for full details and eligibility requirements.

Orange Tenpin Bowl will be hosting the 10th annual New South Wales Country Championships and Masters from 30 January to 7 February. The event is proudly sponsored by Orange City Council and Hanson's Optometrists, Orange.
