After his brilliant performance in the New Zealand Deaf Championships at the start of the month, David Hayward went within a shot of emulating Mario Mastronardi's recent 300 game.

Bowling in the Alpine Pharmacy Sunday Doubles, Hayward rolled a 298 after starting with the first eleven strikes. The deaf star was visibly shaking as he went for his final shot and the nerves proved too much, coming up with an eight count.

Hayward was upset at first after missing the perfect game, which would have been the first in Australia by a deaf player, but soon realised it was a great effort all the same.

In the first two games of the night Hayward rolled 216-199 and finished the evening with a nice 715 series.

John Cooney has been in superb form lately and it continued this week with a 628 series in the Auto Style Wednesday Doubles after games of 200-204-224.

Carl Bishop rolled a personal bets 255 in the Tuesday 6:30 league while others to do well in the same league were David Bloomfield 201, Barry Bourke 200 and Brad Bourke with a 200 as well as an all spare game of 182.

Anthony Knudsen fired a 224 in the Wednesday 7:30 league to edge 222 from Jason Osborne and Paul Chappelow as well as a 215 from Chris Collins.

Frank McGovern led the way in the Thursday Singles with a 236 ahead of Jim Dullaway 211-203, David Thurston 222, Greg Perry 212-205, John Cooney 225, Chris Collins 204 and Julie Wilson 201-213.
