The 16th annual Orange Tenpin Bowling Association Junior City Championships will be held at the Orange Tenpin Bowl this weekend.
Action started with a teams squad last night and continues today and tomorrow with singles, doubles, teams and mixed doubles events.
The championships have been moved from their usual September date to avoid a clash with the adult championships.
The third annual Junior Gutterstopper City Championships will be held at the Bowl next Sunday in separate boys and girls divisions.
A ten-game roll-off for the New South Wales Walter de Veer team will be held at Bathurst Bowl tomorrow with the top four players moving on to the state finals in Sydney next month. Players making the state squad will then compete in the Nationals in Adelaide in October.
Orange bowlers Chris Collins and Jim Dullaway represented their state in the event last year.
The big event on the horizon is the 1999 New South Wales Country Tenpin Open, worth $5,870 in prizemoney, which will be held at the Orange Bowl on 10-11 April.
The Open event replaces last year's Orange Cup with this year's tournament format reverting to that of the former Orange Open.
Bowlers will roll ten games in Saturday's qualifying round with the top 32 players returning for further action on the Sunday.
After six games the field will be cut to the top ten will who then roll another four games before a cut to the top five. Those five bowlers will battle it out in a stepladder final to decide the placings with the winner receiving $1,000 cash plus a trophy, shirt and free entry into the year 2000 NSW Country Open.
Cash prizes for the others in the top five will be $800 (2nd), $600 (3rd), $500 (4th) and $400 (5th) while prizes will be paid down to 20th with that player taking home $100.
