Scoring went through the roof at the Orange Tenpin Bowl this week with numerous high games and series recorded.
With most leagues in the process of wrapping up for the Christmas break, bowlers were out to impress one last time in 1997.
Keeping with recent trends, the bowler of the week was another lesser-known player in Bruce Clements who posted an excellent 686 series in the Wednesday 7:30 league following games of 225-206-255.
Bowling in the same league, Jason Osborne who rolled a 300 game earlier this year, was back to his best form as he shot the high series of the week with games of 216-249-247 for a brilliant 712 block.
Conditions were certainly favourable on Wednesday evening because two other players shot mammoth scores in the earlier Auto Style Doubles.
Jason Brown, another recent 300 roller, was in great form as he shot games of 236-256-199 for a 691 series, just missing a 700 trio.
Wally Price was also in fine form, posting games of 244-246 for a nice 682 series.
Other good games from the Wednesday leagues included Alan Collins 204-202, David Hayward 201, Dianne Gee 203, Glenn Robinson 232, John Rapley 211, John Cooney 200, Tony Knudsen 211, Leo McKay 201, Paul Chappelow 215 and Kevin Carr 201.
Rhearne Trudgett was impressive in the Tuesday Ladies Singles, rolling a 277 lane record which is also the highest game bowled by a junior girl in the Orange centre, eclipsing Melanie Brown's previous record of 276 bowled in October.
Other good games from that league were bowled by Gwen Britt 221, Sharon Trudgett 200-224, Melanie Brown 214, Dianne Gee 220-205, Lyn Handel 214-214 and Karen Sharp 237.
Continuing with the big games, Les Gunner was the star in the Friday Triples, shooting scores of 259-243-171 for a top 673 series, surprisingly the only 600 for the night. It's a pity about the third game as a 700 looked a real possibility.
Other high games from the Triples included Jason Brown 217, Ross Caltabiano 224, John Cooney 206, Warren Handel 226-206, Frank McGovern 203, Mick Moorby 201, Steve Reil 212, Ray Tyquin 210 and Paul West a personal best 241.
Jim Dullaway was in top shape in the Monday Scratch Singles, firing games of 209-204-225-207-195-226 for a nice 1266 six game series. Steve Reil extended his lead in the league with a 1228/6 series after rolling games of 236-235-215.
Other notable games were bowled by Jason Belmonte 234, Les Gunner 203-200, Tim Irwin 248, Joe Werner 225, John Cooney 201 and Wally Price 210-200.
In the three Sunday leagues high games were compiled by Trevor Auliff 209, Mick Moorby218 and Niki Stones 223 (Singles), Danny Ross 212 (Doubles) and Chris Fuller 227 and Barry Rosser 202 (Sabbath).
The Monday Seniors saw a 257 game from John Rapley and games of 217-224 from junior ring-in David Rosser.
Lorna Carr bowled a personal best 200 game in the Friday 6:30 league, which was 60 pins over average.
Other personal best efforts this week included Lauren Streatfeild 144, Shawn Reily 138, Matthew Calvo 146, Chris Lees 195, Kristy Byrnes 158, Phillip Ross 124, Daniel McGregor 152 and Kate McGregor 169.
The Central West Pennants annual general meeting was held last weekend and there were a number of changes adopted for playing conditions for 1999.
There will be two divisions next year, with division one consisting of number one and two teams (male and female) plus junior boys and junior girls. All teams will remain with four members and will bowl eight games each round.
Division two will include grades three and four (male and female) as well as a new mixed team in grade five and a new mixed junior team. All teams will have three members and will bowl six games.
Any player interested in playing Pennants next year is requested to write their name on the nomination form at the Bowl.
Qualifying continues over the Christmas break for the Bob Jane T Mart and Harvey Norman No-Tap tournament.
Bowlers roll four games in qualifying with the top 20 players returning for the ten game final on 24 January.
Entry forms are also available for the 10th annual New South Wales Country Championships to be held at the Orange Bowl from 30 January to 7 February next year.
Six leagues wound up their 1997 schedules over the past week with many more closing down next week.
"Spice Girls" won the Monday Junior league ahead of "S & L Shooters" and "Damo & Matt".
The winning team was Charnelle and Krystal Bowman while the runners-up were Lauren Streatfeild and Sarah Howarth. Members of the third placed team were Damian Hall and Matthew Southwell.
The high game awards went to Wade Selwood (158) and Rebecca Lefevre (151) while Matthew Southwell (289) and Lauren Streatfeild (262) bowled the high two-game blocks.
Hayden Gosper from the "Space Jam" team was the league's most improved playing.
The Tuesday Juniors was won by Amanda Connell and Daniel Flores, competing under the "Rug Rats" moniker.
"Who Cares", Joshua Hayward and Brad South, finished second while the minor place went to the "Crushers" duo of Matthew Culverson and Alysia Hayward.
High game and series prizes went to Chantelle Seers (201), Joshua Hayward (200), Ashley O'Neill (527) and Joel Wiseman (495).
"Stampeding Stallions", made up of Matthew Ripps and Tom Willox, charged off with the main prize in the Friday Juniors. The placings were taken by Brett and Kimberley Mackin under the guise of "Spin & Spice" and Brittany Butler and Jessie Channon, the "Pink Ladies".
The league high game and series were bowled by Angelina Trindade (136), Evan Jackson (167), Kimberley Mackin (242) and Mark Holle (317).

The high game awards went to Tania Caltabiano (123), Shane Speechley (113), Becky Speechley (233) and Scott Bennett (242). Natasha Fedele was the most-improved player.
In the Post School Options competition, featuring schools from Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo, Parkes and Cowra, the winners were the Parkes squad consisting of David Parker, Arthur Symonds, Jamie Nielsen, Scott Drinkwater and Melinda Hallcren.
Second place went to Cowra while Parkes Hanna Barbera was third. The cities with bowling centres were surprisingly shut out of the prize list! The competition high game was a 168 from Scott Drinkwater.
Finally, the Alpine Pharmacy Sunday Doubles saw a win go to "Paddock Butchery", consisting of John Hayward and Lindsay Wright. "Battlers" Karen and Nigel Truslove and Denise Eslick finished second while Mick Owens, Stacie Lech and Toni Owen ("No Idea") were third.
Toni Owen (209) and Adam Richards (242) bowled high games while Elsie Osborne (477) and Trevor Auliff (594) recorded the high series.
