Fast Lane

story first published in the Central Western Daily, Saturday 11 September, 1999.

Orange continued it's dominance in the Central West Tenpin Pennants series, winning eight of the twelve finals last Sunday, with Dubbo and Bathurst winning two events apiece.

The ones, twos and juniors were bowled in Dubbo, while the threes, fours and mixed teams competed in Orange.

The Orange ladies ones went through the qualifying rounds undefeated and proved too strong for Dubbo in the final, winning by nine points. Marilyn Schwenke, with a high game of 224, was Orange's best, averaging 180 and winning six games. Dianne Gee also won six times and averaged 172.

Orange's other players were Sharon Trudgett (157 average) and Maree Brown 157.

The two Orange junior teams won in very closely contested finals. The boys got home by four points while the girls won by just three points.

The girls team were undefeated in 1999 and led all the way but faced a tough fight against a determined Dubbo side. Best for Orange was Mel Brown who won seven of eight games and averaged 164 ahead of Bindy Irwin 145, Sarah Wilson (142) and Rebecca Belmonte 142.

The boys' team was led by a 182 average from Jason Belmonte ahead of Greg Perry (161), Tim Irwin ((152) and Kiel Bugden (151). Belmonte won six matches and shot consecutive games of 201-201-214 at one stage.

Bathurst tipped out Orange in the men's final by just two points, grabbing victory with wins in the last two matches of the day. Henry Phillips averaged 188 for Orange while high games included Phillips 214-224 and Allan Collins 203-210-212.

Dubbo crushed Orange by 24 points in the men's two final with Orange's Trevor Auliff and Les Gunner averaging 174 and 170 respectively. Auliff rolled a nice 236 game while Gunner's best was a 202.

In the ladies twos final Bathurst caused a major upset, beating the previously undefeated Orange outfit by nine points after Orange had led after the first three games. Nikki Stones was Orange's top performer with a 166 average

In Orange the home side had five teams in the finals and all five won.

The men's threes beat Dubbo by 8 points with Col Edwards rolling an impressive 178 average from Frank McGovern (170) and Anthony Knudsen (165). Edwards fired his team's high game with a 202.

The Orange men's fours, undefeated this year, trailed for most of the day but staged a strong finish to record a narrow two point victory over Bathurst.

Will Harvey and Trevor Rowney bowled well to average 172 and 171 respectively while Garry Johnson wasn't too far back on a 162 mark. Johnson fired a 226 while the other high game came from Rowney with a 214.

The closest game of the finals was the ladies fours where Orange nudged Dubbo for the title by just 0.18 points. Orange led all the way but got the staggers in the last two games and just held on. It was a form reversal as Dubbo had beaten Orange in their two previous encounters.

For Orange Kathy Aurisch and Brigitte Eden both averaged 144 while Vivienne Chaston averaged 139 and importantly win her final match in the deciding sixth game.

Orange won the Mixed Juniors by 21 points and the Mixed Adults final by 10 points.

In the junior final Cameron Burley was on fire with a 164 average from Jeff Hunt (150) and Kristin Byrnes 127).

Kevin Carr topped the Mixed Adult averages on 163 ahead of Murray Smith (143) and Lyn Priest (136).

The other final was the ladies three where Dubbo beat Bathurst by 13 points.

There was no doubting bowler of the week honours over the past seven days with Jason Osborne throwing a scorching 704 series in the Friday Triples with games of 204-234-266.

There were four other good series in the league including Jason Brown with 212-241 for a 647 trio, Tim Irwin 256 (623), Aldo Belmonte 218-212 (617) and Lyn Handel 225-(603).

Other noteworthy efforts were supplied by Tony Irwin 244, June Reil 203, Steve Reil 202-211, Tony Richards 220, Melanie Brown 223, Rebecca Belmonte 210-204, David Hayward 224 and Les Gunner 218.

Bowlers again failed to crack the 1200/6 barrier in the Monday Scratch Singles, with Wally Price the closest on 1178. His best games were 213-215-201 (824/4). Jason Belmonte was next best with 211-229 (835/4).

Usually it's good games that are newsworthy but in a major shock, Mark Lijic, who's dominated news in this column over the past few years, failed to roll a single 200 game in nine attempts in the above mentioned leagues which is hard to believe. Despite the off week, his average still stands at a record 219 in the Triples league.

Carl Bishop was in good shape in the Tuesday 6:30 league with 212-213 for a 617 series while in the Tuesday ladies Singles Sharon Trudgett finished with 201-22 for an 802 quartet while Marilyn Schwenke shot a 215.

Garry Johnson rolled a 223 in the Sunday Doubles while Frank McGovern had a 212 in the Sunday Restricted Singles. McGovern also did well in the Monday Mixed Singles with 211-205 while other good games came from Brigitte Eden 211, Mel Johnston 202 and Dale Nugent 204.

Personal best games during the week were bowled by Mark Jones 188, Anthony Jackson 154, Jo-Ann Onus 169, Jessi Channon 119, Elizabeth Holle 116, Graham Solling 172 and Bev Hawkey 188.
