1999 Orange Masters

The Orange Tenpin Bowling Association Adult Masters was held last Sunday with victory going to David Rosser, Sharon Trudgett, Marie Rosser and Chris Fuller. (pictured left to right. Click on the photo for a larger image)

Mark Lijic went into the Open men's Masters as a hot favourite after his brilliant recent form but after being in a winning position with four games to go, stumbled across the line and could only manage fourth place behind David Rosser, Jason Osborne and David Hayward.

It was a great win for the much improved Rosser who finished the twelve game final with a 193 average, winning comfortably by 51 pins from Osborne with Hayward just five pins further back.

Rosser had an opening game of 225, his high for the tournament before three below average efforts. He recovered from those and was consistent for the remainder of the tournament, shooting 201-222-209-203.

Osborne started badly but came back with games of 201-201-211 before a 255 in game ten put him in a winning position but he was unable to capitalise on it in the final two games. He finished with a 189 average.

Deaf champion Hayward rolled an early high game of 254 as well as 212-203-221 and looked set for a win at the ten game mark but crumbled badly in the last two games. His average for the day was 189.

Mark Lijic rolled games of 202-224-245 but really ran out of steam over the last four games, averaging 182.

Jon Thatcher finished fifth ahead of John Cooney, a former dual Masters runner-up behind Peter Brown.

Sharon Trudgett scored a 69-pin win in the women's Open Masters ahead of Dianne Gee and Karen Sharp.

Trudgett averaged 182 for the twelve games and rolled high games of 237-229-204.

Gee finished with a 177 average and rolled high games of 224-200.

Sharp added yet another Masters minor placing to her career, averaging 174 with a high game of 201.

Chris Fuller scored a 34-pin victory in the men's Restricted Masters, averaging 175 to defeat Colin Edwards and Leo McKay with former winner Gary Johnson fourth.

Fuller fired games of 201-202 to set up a handy lead and he needed to as he crashed badly in his final game but had a big enough lead to hold off the challenge from Edwards.

Edwards averaged 172 without the aid of a 200 game. Minor placegetter McKay averaged 167.

The women's Restricted Masters saw a double to the Rosser family with Marie Rosser capturing her most important tournament win to date then later watching her son David win the Open Masters.

Marie Rosser averaged 156 to score a narrow 17-pin victory from runner-up Leanne McKell with Brigitte Eden third.

Rosser and McKell duelled for the lead throughout the tournament, with the eighth game proving decisive with Rosser gaining a 25-pin break at that point.

McKell's 192 was the high game for the division.

The Orange Masters winners will now represent their centre in the New South Wales Masters next month.
