Orange tenpin bowlers Mario Mastronardi and David Hayward shared the limelight over the past week with high calibre performances locally and internationally.

mario mastronardiMario Mastronardi (pictured left) rolled a 300 game in the Friday Triples last week, which was only Orange's third perfect game since the centre opened in 1983.

The big-hooking Mastronardi has gone close to achieving every bowler's dream on a number of previous occasions with a 298 a decade ago readily springing to mind.

After an average opening game of 182, Mastronardi made all the right moves as he strung together the necessary twelve strikes for his 300 game, having some luck on he final shot which he pulled left for what some onlookers described as a massive Brooklyn strike.

To prove it wasn't a fluke, Mastronardi started the third game with a further seven strikes and went on to record a nice 247 game for a 729 three game series.

Previous perfect games on the Orange lanes were bowled by Craig Streatfeild and June Bryant.

David Hayward added more jewels to his crown with a brilliant performance in the New Zealand Deaf Championships last weekend, where he won the New Zealand Masters as well as the All Events and Trios. He also finished second in Singles and seventh in Doubles.

In the Trios Hayward rolled a New Zealand championships record of 278 then 191-242 on the way to a hot 711 series as he and partners Russell McNab and Frank Watson won by 22 pins.

In the handicapped four game Singles event Hayward, with zero handicap, rolled games of 194-203-237-238 for 872 and finished second, unable to hold off eventual winner Stephen Jourdain who had 52 pins start each game!

Hayward rolled a solid 588 series in the doubles where he and partner Cameron Ross finished seventh behind winners John Gilmore and Frank Watson.

Those efforts gave Hayward a ten game All-Events tally of 2171 which he comfortably won, finishing 295 pins clear of runner-up Neville Richardson.

The top five players in the All-Events category then progressed to the Masters.

In the first match Stephen Jourdain dispatched Denis Robinson before then eliminating Anthony Markovitch. In the semi-final Neville Richardson beat Jourdain 232-189 to set up a decider against Hayward.

In a tight match Richardson came through 202-200 but as Hayward was leading qualifier he had the right to a repercharge. Both bowlers had trouble in the rematch with Hayward eventually getting up 178-150.

With his 300 game in the Friday Triples, Mario Mastronardi naturally picked up bowler of the week honours but there were many other impressive efforts during the week.

Also from the Triples, John Cooney continued his great recent form with games of 214-258 for 640 series. Cooney bowled his 258 in a high-scoring head-to-head against Mastronardi, edging his 247!

Jason Osborne bowled well, knocking out games of 228-213-236 for a handy 677 block.

Others to rate a mention were June Bryant 254-210 (625/3), Aldo Belmonte 205, Jason Belmonte 209, Chris Collins 221, Les Gunner 222, Tony Irwin 201 and Henry Phillips 203.

Mark Lijic has been in sensational form all year and he racked up a huge 1304 six game series in the Monday Scratch Singles, rolling games of 225-225-269-208 which included a 702/3 block.

Lijic looked like he was going to emulate Mastronardi's 300 game, starting one game with seven strikes before an inexplicable gutter ball slowed him down, eventually finishing with a 269.

Ian Hazzard rolled consecutive games of 246-256-212 (714/3) while other notable efforts were bowled by Les Gunner 201, Wally Price 235, Joe Werner 203, Melanie Brown a personal best 247, Ken Wiseman 206, Steve Reil 216 twice, June Bryant 255, Jason Belmonte 214-223 (631/3) and Jim Dullaway 203-206.

Dullaway did well in the Wednesday Autostyle Doubles, shooting 248-202 for a 637 series. In the same league high scores came from Keith Dean 217, Phill Blakeley 200, Henry Phillips 211, Glenn Robinson 205 and Allan Collins 225.

There were a number of good games in the Tuesday Ladies Singles led by Gwen Britt with a 232 ahead of Melanie Brown 207, Maree Brown 221, Dianne Gee 202, Lyn Handel 218-206, Bonnea Wiseman 218, Rhearne Trudgett 200 and Karen Sharp 201-213.

Rob Jones fired a 225 in the Tuesday 6.30 league while Gloria Burke rolled 223 and David Bloomfield 204.

Norm Tandy bowled a 236 in the Sunday Doubles while Steve Eslick bowled 235 and Garry Eslick 208.

Scott Speirs went 83 pins over average for a 236 game in the Monday 6:30 league while in the Monday Mixed Singles high games were bowled by Alf Bishop 202, Les Hill 213 and Chris Collins 233.

Anthony Knudsen shot a personal best 229 in the Wednesday 7:30 league ahead of Brett Connerty 211, Paul Chappelow 203, Jason Osborne 200 and Chris Collins 202.

Gail Perry was yet another bowler to bowl a personal best game, recording a nice 234 in the Wednesday 10am league while David Birt shot a 208 in the Thursday 10am league.

Other personal best games this week were bowled by Anne Carroll 169, Ben Rolles 167, Chris Lees 206, Kristy Smith 124, Sharon Ryan 180, Rebecca Leatch 160 and Leanne Shannon 189 then a 201 for a 529/3 series, while Ingrid James bowled an all spare game.

There are a number of events being contested this weekend including a local Golf and Bowl tournament which has a full line-up of 14 teams competing.

After a barbecue lunch nine holes of golf using the ambrose format will be played at Wentworth Golf Club.
