Azul and Edith Grice outshone some of their more fancied rivals with a decisive win in the Orange Tenpin Bowling Association Adult-Junior Tournament held at the Orange Tenpin Bowl last Sunday.
The Grices came into the tournament with a large handicap advantage and both bowled well over their entering averages as they won the four game doubles event easily by 56 pins. Edith shot a 477/4 series while Azul rolled just four pins less.
Finishing second was the combination of Ben Lees and Judy Louie, nine pins ahead of minor placegetters Sarah Hunt and Brigitte Eden.
Missing a spot in the top three by a singe pin was the team of Jason Shields and John Rapley while Aaron and Jason Osborne and James Whittaker/Gwen Britt were also close to the placegetters.
Reigning city champion Henry Phillips led the individual averages on a 195 average ahead of Jason Osborne and Phill Marshall.
High games included Phillips 225, Osborne 210, Marshall 214 as well as Marilyn Schwenke 201-203, Aaron Osborne 204, Tom Johnson 223, Judy Louie 210, John
Rapley 204, David Rosser 206 and Bettina Wines 206.
Personal best games were bowled by Sarah Hunt 136, Jason Shields 151 and James Whittaker 171.
The tournament has developed into one of the most popular on the bowling calendar and attracted a capacity field of 32 teams.
The tournament was followed by the annual Association barbecue and presentation day.
Bowlers-of-the-year, based on points won in various tournaments throughout the year, were announced with the honours going to Rebecca Belmonte and Jason Belmonte in the junior ranks and Marie Rosser and John Rapley in the adults. The honour is a testament to those bowlers consistency during 1999.
The annual junior high game awards were won by Rhearne Trudgett (277) and Jason Belmonte (290) while Sharon Trudgett's 277 was best for the women. The men's high game of 279 was shared by Jason Osborne, Jason brown, Mark Lijic and John Cooney.
The high three-game series awards went to Sharon Trudgett (685) and David Hayward (753) while the four-game awards were won by June Reil (940) and Mark Lijic (961).
The prestigious Association award for services to tenpin bowling during 1999 went to Marisa Belmonte and Bob Waddell.

As you would have read earlier in the week, Orange's Melanie Brown and Jason Belmonte gained a spot in the New South Wales Central Zone President's Shield team for 2000 following the roll-offs at Castle Hill over the past two weekends.
Melanie Brown was in devastating form, winning all but one of her matches and drawing that other game. Brown averaged 185 for the 20 games of matchplay to qualify in first place, the second time she's made the team in the past three years. She finished a massive 385 pins clear of her nearest rival.
Others making the Central Zone team were Alison Brennan (173 average), Donna Payne (174), Amanda Wallis (172), Sandi Edwards (175), Amanda Barrott (170) and Kelly Jarrett (156). Former Orange bowler Elizabeth Hitman finished ninth.
Dual New South Wales Country Junior Open champion Jarrod Lean topped the qualifiers for the boy's team on a 201 average, 128 pins clear of Chris Warner (199 average) with Jason Belmonte in third place on a 194 average.
Rounding out the team were Michael Frazi (189), Matthew Harrison (188), Jason Leong (184) and Evan Brasting (182).
Orange's other combatants were Greg Perry (12th) and Tim Irwin (13th).

Junior bowler Craig Priest is this week's star following a big effort in the Monday Mixed Singles. Bowling off a 120 average, Priest started with a 194 personal best game then topped that with his first 200, a nice 208 effort.
He then rolled a 179 for a 581 series - the first time he's ever cracked the 500 barrier then rolled another 179 in his final game for a 760/4 series, 280 pins over average! Priest was also on fire in the last round of the Wednesday Juniors with game of 17 and 174.
That league was won by Hypo Brats ahead of Dragons and Redemptionists. Chris Lees cleaned up the league awards with a high game of 253, high series of 414/2 and high average.
In the Monday Singles Greg Carter shot a 202 while Frank McGovern bowled a 223. McGovern also rolled a solid 222 in the Sunday Doubles.
In the Sunday Singles Col Edwards shot a 226 game while Trevor Auliff rolled two games of 203. In the Sabbath League Will Harvey bowled 202 while John Priest managed a personal best 216 game.
Tracey Dwyer bowled a personal best 214 in the Friday 10am league while John Rapley fired games of 209-245.
Mark Lijic has really found his best form again and reeled off games of 212-213-246 for a 671 series in the Friday Triples to see his average sit at a record 214. Tony Richards also bowled well with 226-225-204 for a 655 block while John Rapley started with 246-214 on the way to a 631 series.
Alan Collins fired 202-244 for a 609 trio while Horst Uhle shot a personal best 236 game as part of his 604 series.
Other high games came from Chris Collins 201-211, Maree Caltabiano 222, Lyn Handel 206, Darren Shepherd 207 (personal best) and Frank McGovern 204.
Lijic also led the way in the Monday Scratch Singles with 1201/6. He started slowly but fired 234-204-212-214 (864) in his last four games. Mario Mastronardi started well with 214-216-204-209 (1020/5) before crashing in the last game of the night.
Wally Price also started well with 204-215 (611/3) before floundering while Tim Irwin did the opposite, starting badly then rattling home with 247-214 in his last two games to finish with 643/3.
Jason Belmonte had an off night with a lone 200 to show for his efforts while the only other good games came from Jason Brown 202 and Les Gunner 201.
Tim Irwin continued the good form in the Wednesday Doubles with 218-229 for a 638 series. Other notable efforts came from the in-form Dianne Hazzard 214, Leo McKay 213, Andrew Pinkstone 202-208, Marilyn Schwenke 205, Glenn Robinson 216, Ian Hazzard 208-204, Henry Phillips 203 and David Hayward 200.
Jane McClymont bowled a 209 in the Monday 10am Triples while Marilyn Schwenke shot a 203. In the Monday 6.30 league Marlene Stibbard shot a personal best 226 ahead of Mark Lennard 204 and Craig Stojanovic 200.
High games from the Tuesday Ladies Singles were Sharon Trudgett 200, Gwen Britt 208, Marilyn Schwenke 203 and Dianne Gee 205.
Personal best games this week were rolled by Joan Cox 160, Olga Milla 172, Evelyn Harris 166, Audrey Christopherson 178, Judy Chidgey 143, Blake Robinson 121, Dianne Puris 160, Cameron Folley 126, Rebecca McNabb 169, Kathleen Turner 159, Rob Miles 170 and Ruth Bragg 199.

It's that time of the year again when leagues start to wind up. The Monday Juniors finished this week and was won by Dragons, just a half point ahead of Girl Power with Us Kids third.
Members of the winning team were Madison and Rhys Cunich while the runners-up were Stevie White and Jade Horstman.
League high games were bowled by Caitlin Hanley and Bryan Clements while the high series awards went to Nicole Carr and Mitch Carr.
The Friday K-Mart Teen league is an interesting concept, offering a CD single as a prize each week plus CDs to the league placegetters to the value of $200 for first, $150 for second and $50 for third.
Tying for league champions were the combinations of Bodie Green/Graham Solling and Ben and Sam Gibson. Third place went to Naomi Nash and Joel Star.

Entry forms are now out for the 11th annual New South Wales Country Championships and Masters which will be held in Orange on the weekends of 29-30 January and 5-6 February 2000.
The Dubbo Golden Oldies Championships will be held this weekend for players over 50 from Dubbo, Bathurst or Orange.
