The second annual pee wee Gutterstopper Championships were held at the Orange Tenpin Bowl last Sunday with over one hundred people attending the presentation ceremony where the juniors were awarded medals in keeping with the Commonwealth Games theme.

Juniors bowled three games with handicap with the added advantage of gutter stoppers.

In the girls section Tracey Bouffler won the gold medal with pinfall of 709 ahead of silver medalist Leigha Aurisch (665) and Angela McClure who took the bronze with 637.

It was a great struggle for third and just missing a medal was Becky Speechley ahead of Eileen McClure, Tiarne Price, Kathy Quommo and Amy Brooks.

Tiarne Price at just three years of age was the youngest competitor in the Championships.

There was an excellent response in the boys section with 25 bowlers lining up. Mark Holle won the gold medal after rolling a personal best game of 192 on the way to a 721 three game series.

Jason Wright won the silver medal with pinfall of 685, just two pins in front of third placed Evan Jackson.

The 15th annual Orange City Championships for adults and juniors conclude this weekend. Full results will be presented in this column next week.

Upcoming events include the 37th annual Australian Tenpin Bowling Congress National Championships which run from 3-17 October on the Gold Coast.

The Bathurst City Championships will be held next month over two weekends from 24 October to 1 November. Entry forms are available at the Bowl. Orange bowlers will no doubt be trying to emulate last years success when they won around fifteen events.

The 3rd annual Ron Boulton Marine & Cycles and Harvey Norman 1998 Orange Junior Cup will be held on Sunday 15 November.

Prizes in this event include a mountain bike for first place in scratch and handicap divisions as well as a trophy from Central West Trophies, a shirt and $200 cash. There are also electrical goods up for grabs for second to fourth placed finishers and cash prizes for others in the top ten,

All entrants also have the chance of winning a Brunswick Zone bowling ball.

A preview event will be held on the Saturday night in the form of a city versus country challenge.

The final qualifying round of the South West zone Country Challenge took place in Dubbo last weekend with the Mid City Motor Lodge Orange mens team finishing fourth.

The team went into the final round well behind third placed Bathurst and despite making up considerable ground on that team but were unable to peg them back, therefore missing a spot in the state final in November.

The team bowled reasonably well, averaging around 185 and winning 27 of 50 matches.

Individually, Stan Streatfeild jumped in for two games and emerged with a 195 average and one win one loss.

Captain Ray Tyquin was solid as always, averaging 185 and winning six of nine games.

David Hayward and Chris Collins both averaged 184 with the former winning four times from eight matches and the latter three of seven games.

Other averages included Henry Phillips (183), Ken Wiseman (181) who won six from nine games and Mark Lijic (175).

The womens team took a slender one point lead into the final round but unfortunately their fate is unknown as no-one passed on the results!
