Cara Honeychurch Maxine Nable

Theres a lot of tenpin news this week both from the Orange Bowl and the Commonwealth Games where the sport had medal status for the first time.

Cara Honeychurch dominated at the Sunway Pyramid Bowl in Kuala Lumpur winning three gold medals from as many events contested.

The unassuming 26 year old Melbourne superstar, who has been blitzing opponents both nationally and internationally for the past few years, won the first ever tenpin gold medal awarded when teamed with Maxine Nable, 21 of Sydney, in the Womens Doubles event last Sunday.

Honeychurch rolled an impressive eight game tally of 1765 for a 220 average but Nable was the star in the doubles however, shooting 1913 for a 239 average as the pair finished 130 pins clear of silver medalists Shalin Zulkifli and Kin Ngoh Lai of Malaysia with Gemma Burden and Pauline Buck (England) finishing third.

The Mens Doubles went to Malaysias Kenny Ang and Benny Heng 223 pins ahead of Conrad Lister and Antoine Jones (Bermuda) with Frank Ryan and Michael Muir of Australia taking the bronze medal.

The Mixed Doubles was contested on Monday and it was another gold medal for Cara Honeychurch as she teamed with fellow Victorian Frank Ryan to win by 35 pins after tallying 3605 pins. This was memorably Australias 500th Commonwealth Games gold medal of all time.

In this event Englands Richard Hood made history by becoming the first bowler to shoot a perfect 300 at the Commonwealth Games, a feat that would be emulated by Honeychurch in the Singles. Hood and Pauline Buck took the silver medal while Canadians William Buck and Jane Amlinger were third.

The mens singles saw another win to Kenny Ang (Malaysia) with 6046 pins ahead of William Rowe and Warren Rennox, both from Canada.

Cara Honeychurch destroyed her opponents in the Singles qualifying, reeling off games of 257-243-257-266-247-227-261-300-258-243 for a stunning 256 average. She was unmerciless in the matchplay finals, averaging 241 to claim the gold medal with pinfall of 6,370, 378 pins ahead of Australias Maxine Nable and Malaysias Kin Ngoh Lai.

Australia topped the medal tally with 3 gold to Malaysias 2 gold from the five events bowled.
