Championships and the Commonwealth Games

The 15th annual Orange Tenpin Bowling Association City Championships commence today at the Orange Bowl in both adult and junior divisions.
The championships feature singles, doubles, mixed doubles and teams in male and female sections and also incorporates the Teams Challenge at 1pm tomorrow.
A junior gutterstopper division will be held next Sunday while the adult and junior championships conclude on Sunday 27 September.
Other upcoming events include the sixth and final qualifying round of the South West Zone Country Challenge at Dubbo next weekend and the 37th annual Australian Tenpin Bowling Congress National Championships on the Gold Coast during October.
Tenpin bowling also makes it�s debut this weekend as a medal sport for the first time in the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, attracting unprecedented media coverage for the sport.
Australia�s team features Cara Honeychurch, Maxine Nable, Frank Ryan and Michael Muir.
The bowling schedule at the Games is doubles tomorrow, mixed doubles on Monday and singles on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Those four bowlers have been in great form this year. In the recent final of the South Pacific Classic Frank Ryan won the men�s event with a 217 average while Maxine Nable averaged 218 to beat Cara Honeychurch in the women�s division. Nable was also the top female in last month�s New South Wales Open where she finished a fourth behind Andrew Frawley.
Earlier this year Honeychurch beat an international field to win the Manhattan Super Classic and she also beat Michael Muir in the recent Perth Cup.
Muir meanwhile finished a close third behind American Tim Mack in the Koolfoam National Classic.

Jason Brown rolled the top series at the Bowl this week with games of 203-223-236 for a 662 block in the always high-scoring Friday Triples.
In the same league 600 series were bowled by Tony Richards with 217-212-214 (643/3) to lift his average to 200, Jason Belmonte 211-214 (600) and Peter Brown 210-200-215 (625). Mark Lijic also fired 236-210 for a 638 trio that lifted his averaged to a centre high mark of 205.
Also doing well last Friday were Aldo Belmonte 202, Maree Caltabiano 204, Lyn Handel 245, Mario Mastronardi 200, Frank McGovern 212, Henry Phillips 214, Jonathan Thatcher 201 and Ray Tyquin 200.
Jason Belmonte again dominated the Monday Scratch Singles with 233-203-201-212 for a 1233/6 series. Others to rate a mention were Les Gunner 200-211, Steve Reil 219-234, Jim Dullaway 212, Joe Werner 214-211 (611/3), Tim Irwin 236 (624/3), June Bryant 213 and John Cooney 242.
Sharon Trudgett topped the Tuesday Ladies Singles with a 220 ahead of Dianne Gee 205, Melanie Brown 214 and Lyn Handel 202-201.
Trudgett Returned the next day in the Wednesday Doubles with 201-221. David Hayward rolled the high game of the week with a 259 ahead of Henry Phillips 203, John Cooney 204-200 and Julie Wilson 219.
Rob Jones rolled 210 in the Tuesday 6:30 league and 202 in the Sunday Sabbath League. Trevor Rowney snr shot a 203 in that league while in the earlier Sunday Singles high games came from Trevor Auliff 203-208, James Dubbelde 202 and Frank McGovern 226.
Jason Osborne shot a 616 series in the Sunday Doubles with games of 202-213-201 while Michael Moorby had a personal best 201.
Ken Carr bowled a 225 in the Monday 6:30 league while John Rapley shot a 231 in the Monday Golden Oldies.
High games from the Wednesday 7:30 league included Malcolm West 202, Trevor Connerty 213 and Tony Knudsen 209.
Personal best games this week were bowled by Martin Halls 142, Peggy Bourke 177, Johnathon Hilder 109 and Natalie Ross 105.
