Cara Honeychurch Wins $50,000
PERFECT GAME IN AMF GOLD CUP
Mechanicsville, Va.- Cara Honeychurch, Australia, arrived in the states just twelve days ago looking to compete against the finest women bowlers in the world and hopefully to just be able to compete. In only her first event as a professional, Honeychurch not only reached the televised finals but also achieved just the second 300 game by a woman on TV during the finals of the AMF Gold Cup at AMF Hanover Lanes in Mechanicsville, Va.
Michelle Feldman first made history when she bowled the first-ever 300 on television by a woman in July of 1997 during the finals of the Southern Virginia Open in Danville, Va. Honeychurch's perfect game came during the first match of the Championship Round against experienced veterans Aleta Sill, Dearborn, Mich., and Wendy Macpherson, Henderson, Nev.
The petite Australian, an international star who won the AMF World Cup in 1996 before joining the ladies tour, stayed cool and calm under the pressure of the TV lights, even recovering from the near-disaster of having a ball hole insert dislodge before her eleventh shot. After quickly gluing it back in place, Honeychurch coolly delivered a perfect shot and then, getting her twelfth strike raised her fists straight overhead.
Play was stopped as Honeychurch was awarded a bonus of $50,000 from MasterCard, presented to her by John Falzone, president of the Professional Woman's Bowling Association. Honeychurch continued to win her matches, making it to the final match before finishing second to tournament champion, Dana Miller-Mackie, Albuquerque, NM.
