Australia's Cara Honeychurch Wins The Brunswick Women's World Open
Lake Zurich, Illinois- Cara Honeychurch, Melbourne, Australia, completed a very successful three week swing through the States by winning the Professional Women's Bowling Association 1999 Brunswick Women's World Open, Thursday evening, over Tiffany Stanbrough, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 237-207.
"My goal was to come out on tour next year, work my way to making 80-90% of the cuts and perhaps win a title," said Honeychurch, " But to win a title so quickly, I could just die now and be happy."
Honeychurch, the top seed, began the final match with a double, and later connected for a four-bagger to win over the hard-luck Stanbrough, who put every shot in and around the pocket.
"This time on TV was different for me, I was loose, I was not relaxed, my emotions were really under control," said Stanbrough, who made her very first TV appearance over the summer in Rockford, Ill, "I feel like I made great shots every ball, the pins just didn't fall for me tonight."
Honeychurch, who just two weeks ago displayed her power of concentration when she bowled a perfect 300 game on TV, had to have a sharp mental game once again to deal with a few distractions. In the second frame she took a re-rack and in the seventh a bug landed on the lanes.
"Those distractions actually helped to loosen me up, and the fly was pretty funny, I thought," smiled Honeychurch, "This is a sport I love and I try to relax and enjoy myself. When I do I make better shots."
In the first match, a three-way shoot-out, Dana Miller-Mackie, Albuquerque, New Mexico defeated Tish Johnson, Northridge, California, and Michelle Feldman, Skaneateles, New York, 225-200-173. The semi-final match had the loose-swinging Stanbrough defeat Miller-Mackie 224-178.
In her first week on the WPBA tour, Honeychurch finished second behind Dana Miller-Mackie, earning $15,000 on top of her $50,000 300-game bonus.
Her second event was in The Three Rivers Open in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she finished 22nd with a 208 average to earn $1,500.
With her $14,400 for winning the Brunswick World Open, Honeychurch earned $80,900 for just three weeks effort!
