Fast Lane Awards
Finally the annual special "Fast Lane" awards. There's no physical reward, just the honour of being named in this column and on the Internet for millions to see!
Who was the most improved player of 1998? It's impossible to limit this to just one person as there were quite a few players who either made rapid improvement to their game or pushed their game to the next level.
By the end of 1998 Jason Brown was as good as anybody at the Bowl and sported the centre's highest current average at the end of the year. He was rewarded with a 300 game in October.
Jason Osborne was tipped as a player of the future last year and he certainly made everyone take notice in 1998, shooting a 300 game (the centre's first in a tournament) as well as many other high games and a stack of 700 series. He also won the coveted City Championships Open All Events title.
Junior Greg Perry has made steady improvement over the past few years and had emerged as one of the centre's top prospects by the end of the year. He shot a number of top games this year and really lifted his average towards open level. His major achievement was a great win in the junior City Championships Open Singles.
Chris Collins started the year as a B grader but was just behind the open grade bowlers by year-end. He made the New South Wales State Walter de Veer team in 1998 and smashed a number of records in the New South Wales Country Championships.
Jason Belmonte and Mark Lijic meanwhile managed to improve on 1997 and were at the top end of the scale at 1998 year-end.
The best comeback? Probably Tony Richards who came back from a lengthy lay-off to establish a consistent 200 plus average in the Friday Triples throughout the year with a couple of big series to boot.
The biggest disappearance? Some readers may be thinking of someone else but it's impossible to go past Peter Brown. The most dominant force in bowling in Orange since the centre opened in 1984 bowled for a couple of months at the start of the year then went on a lengthy trip round Australia. He returned briefly later in the year before moving to the Central Coast. His presence on the lanes will be sorely missed.
The most deserved win? Another tough one but probably John Cooney's victory in the City Championships Open Singles. After two very close runner-up finishes to Peter Brown in the Masters, Cooney edged "Porky" for the Open Singles crown.
The most deserved selection? Jim Dullaway, along with Chris Collins qualified for the New South Wales State Walter de Veer team.
The funniest story? Without doubt the new league player who rolled his first "turkey" (three strikes in succession for non-bowlers) and thought that the feat had earned him some poultry!
Late breaking news:
Jason Brown continued his amazing recent form with a 300 game in a practice session at the Bowl on Wednesday of this week.
