HOCKEY TEAMS

Each year each Australian state selects teams to play in the Australian Championships. The venue rotates between the states each year. The divisions are; MENS, WOMENS, MASTERS, UNDER 18's, UNDER 21's.

1999/2000 NATIONALS - PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Tasmania had it's most successful nationals ever at this tournament. The Tasmanian mens team won gold for the first time ever ending a 10 year streak of silver! It was amazing to beat WA in their home state. Stuart Parkinson won the player of the final. The Tassie under 18 team also took home gold and the women won silver. The women's team did very well, and defeated WA in the second round robin game.

The results were:
MEN: 1st TAS, 2nd WA, 3rd VIC, 4th QLD, 5th NSW
WOMEN: 1st WA, 2nd TAS, 3rd VIC, 4th NSW
UNDER 18: 1st TAS, 2nd VIC, 3rd WA
MASTERS: 1st WA, 2nd ???, 3rd ???

The Australian teams were selected after the tournament for the world championships in April in Hobart (our home tiles!). Local Tasmanians were well selected with 6 men, 5 women, 2 men masters and 2 women masters.

1998/1999 Nationals, Sydney NSW

In 1998/99, the Nationals were held in Homebush, Sydney which is actually the venue for the 2000 olympics.

RESULTS:
MEN: 1st Western Australia, 2nd Tasmania, 3rd Victoria, 4th New South Wales, 5th Queensland.
WOMEN: 1st Victoria, 2nd Western Australia, 3rd New South Wales, 4th Tasmania, 5th Queensland.
MASTERS: 1st Western Australia, 2nd ???, 3rd ???, 4th ???
UNDER 21: 1st NSW, 2nd Tas. UNDER 18: 1st WA, 2nd Tas, 3rd NSW, 4th Vic, 5th Qld.


1997/98 Nationals, Hobart, Tasmania

Last year the nationals were held in Hobart, Tasmania. The results were as follows;

Mens
Gold: Western Australia
Silver: Tasmania
Bronze: South Australia
Fourth: Victoria
Fifth: New South Wales

Overall, Tasmania came second in all divisions except the under 18's which we won. This secured Tasmania champion state overall.

The 1997/98 men's team was: Rowan Bridley (Captain/Coach), Colin Hepher, Keith Midson, Simon Talbot, Steve Cleary, Mathew Hosan, Craig Granquist, Stuart Parkinson, Aaron Crocombe, Richard Lane, Derek Heiden & Jason Lord.

The games against WA were close. The round robin game score was 3:1 to WA. The score in the grand final was 3:2. Selections for the Australian team was held the next day. Tasmanian representatives selected to travel to San Jose, California in June were: Rowan Bridley, Keith Midson, Richard Lane, Derek Heiden, Jason Lord & Simon Talbot. Simon unfortunately had to pull out from the team later.

1996/97 Nationals, Canberra, ACT

A very close nationals, with a double round robin, then finals. Tasmania drew with WA in the first round, 3:3 & lost in the second round. Tasmania also drew with NSW 1:1 in the second round after beating them in the first. The first final against NSW was 2:1 to Tas. Tas then lost to WA in the grand final 1:0.

Results: 1st-WA, 2nd-Tas, 3rd-NSW, 4th-Vic, 5th-Qld.
