The Amsterdam ArenA
The ArenA is one of the newest of Europe's major stadiums, having been opened - with a friendly against Brazil - in the summer of 1996. Ajax had long needed a new home: their own, historic, De Meer was too
small and the Olympisch stadion was too old and had started crumbling. Ajax,
their major sponsors and the local authority are among the consortium who own the ArenA.
Initial financing was encouraged with attractive terms for executive boxes and season tickets.
Thus, even before it had been opened for business, the ArenA was sold out for the first two season of
league football. The stadium has a variety of other uses. The roof is fully retractable, making it ideal for pop
concerts and it was also the venue for an experimental six-a-side indoor football tournament in January 1997. The enclosed nature of the design brought its own problems, however: difficulty in ventilating the pitch meant that the surface had to be replaced four times in the first year. In the August of 1998 it was
the venue for the Champion's league final between Real Madrid and Juventus. It has also been picked as one of the
venues for Euro 2000. There will be three group matches, a quarter-final, and a semi-final played here. Unfortunately for the ArenA, the openeing match and final of the tournament will not be played in it.
