Mark Philippoussis Interview
Aug. 10,  97 in Indianapolis

The United States and Australia have a great Davis Cup rivalry, it's a
great tradition between the two countries. Is that something you have
spoken to John Newcombe and Tony Roche about?

Philipoussis: Not really a lot, a bit with Newc, he gets more fired up. We are concentrating on what we have to do. It should be interesting.

How exciting is Davis Cup play for you?

Philipoussis: It's got to one of the highlights for any player, definitely. You are not playing for yourself - win or lose yu are playing for your team mates, captain, coach and your country. There is a bit of pressure behind that but that's what makes it so great. There is tradition behind
it and that feeling of winning a match and the guys jumping up, high fives here and there, there is a lot of good things about it.

This is the biggest Davis Cup tie Australia has played for a few years
now. What are you expecting out of this?

Philipoussis: We have struggled a bit but we are in the world group semifinals now and the boys are pumped to do well. There is pressure on the U.S. playing at home, we are the underdons and that's better. We will get a lot out of it. The thing is after going to a Davis Cup tie you play better because you are pumped and every match is like a match point, every game counts.

What will it be like playing Pete Sampras and Michael Chang in an environment that is quite different to other tournaments?

Philipoussis: You're playing one and two in the world so it will be a bit tough but if you are not going to get pumped up for that match then nothing in the world will get you pumped. Maybe that's what I also need at the moment. Whoever plays those matches for Australia will
have Australia behind them
