Florida: The Rivals

The Gators experienced their most successful decade in the 1990s. The team only yielded 22 losses and 1 tie during the decade, and along the way Florida conquered some old demons. No longer would they trip up during the Louisiana State-Auburn-Georgia trifecta; that gauntlet had derailed many a conference title hope for Florida. But in the 90s, the Gators were an outstanding 26-4 against those old bugaboos. In 1990, coach Steve Spurrier gave Ben Hill Griffin Stadium a nickname: The Swamp (where only Gators get out alive). With the nickname came pride and a mystique and best of all, wins... only four losses in that venue since it got its name. While Alabama has come close, only one team continues to get the better of the Gators: Florida State. Thanks to the Noles contemporary rise, the Gators have lost ground on their historical won-loss advantage over Florida State even in the throes of unequivocally their best ten year stretch.

Florida was 5-4 in bowl games; 3-3 in "major" bowl games, 2-2 in the Sugar Bowl, 1-1 in the Citrus Bowl, 0-1 in the Fiesta Bowl, 1-0 in the Gator Bowl, 1-0 in the Orange Bowl, and 1-1 in de facto National Championship bowl games.
